Do you love providing polymer materials expertise? Come join a creative engineering team at Apple, dedicated to delivering professional solutions to a wide array of material and product related issues. We are seeking an energetic, hands-on individual to join the Failure Analysis lab. The lab is responsible for applying advanced analytical technologies to the characterization of Apple products. The lab team provides failure analysis services to resolve reliability, manufacturing, and material design issues. The successful candidate will have a passion for surface characterization of soft materials.

Key Qualifications

  • Hands on experience in Applied Mechanics, Materials Science, Engineering, Polymer Science or related discipline.
  • Broad working knowledge of a variety of nano-mechanical techniques including sample preparation experience. Theoretical understanding of the following areas: surface characterization of polymers, nano-mechanics, rheology, etc.
  • General knowledge of polymers used in the electronics industry, including their processing, compounding and formulation.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, data reduction methods, and spreadsheet manipulation; general understanding of DOE principles is a plus.
  • Highly effective communication skills including ability to seek out direction, ask clarifying questions, communicate findings, and accept feedback.
  • Willingness to be flexible, manage multiple activities, and frequently pivot to new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of chemical hygiene and proven capability to work safely in a lab environment using solvents, cryogens, and corrosive materials.

Description
- Develop failure analysis methods for soft materials and thin films using nano-mechanical surface characterization techniques such as nano-indenters, tribology, AFM, etc.
- Hands-on experience with Nano-indentation, AFM, Rheology and DMA to drive complex failure analysis studies on the development, manufacturing and testing of polymers, plastics, elastomers, thin-films, adhesives, etc.
- Combine applied mechanics, materials science & engineering and polymer science with advanced microscopy techniques to characterize sample structures and morphology.
- Synthesize information about failure modes from lab requestors with a diverse group of backgrounds to develop test plans that lead to a root cause identification.
- Maintain high-quality documentation and prepare technical reports that explain key results succinctly. Communicate effectively (both verbal and written) complex analytical data to those with and without lab expertise.

Education & Experience
- B.S. and 5+ years industry experience; M.S. and 2+ years industry experience; or PhD in Applied Mechanics, Materials Science, Engineering, Polymer Science or related discipline.
