Job Purpose

The Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer works closely with research, development, and testing teams to combine simulation modeling with data analytics in order to provide recommendations to optimize system designs in support of current and future research, development, and testing efforts. Specifically, the M&S Engineer is responsible for constructing computer simulation models, verifying and validating simulation models, performing simulation experiments to predict system behaviors, providing solutions to project stakeholders, and improving systems and processes. The M&S Engineer is familiar with important M&S concepts and techniques, constantly keeps abreast of new tool and language developments, and is familiar with a wide range of both open source and proprietary modeling and simulation tools, frameworks, and environments. These can include tools such as AFSIM, AnyLogic, Arena, ExtendSim, OpenFoam, OpenModelica, NetLogo, etc.

In addition to tools, an M&S Engineer should be aware of many of the core M&S techniques such as discrete event simulation, continuous simulation, agent-based modeling, distributed simulation, and conceptual modeling. At higher levels, the M&S Engineer/Specialist guides and conducts modeling, simulation, and analysis activities which include eliciting requirements from stakeholders to support the design and implementation of M&S frameworks, computer simulation models, and simulation experiments. Furthermore, the M&S Engineer is responsible for ensuring that models and simulations are designed according to M&S best practices and standards as well as for flexibility to support future modeling needs and enhancements

Project/Unit Description

The Signals and Systems Division engages in research related to advanced sensor concepts, electronic warfare, signal and image processing development, current and future threat analysis, operational employment concepts, test and evaluation, and knowledge management. These tasks are primarily accomplished through the application of modeling, simulation, and analysis

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct sponsor engagement and facilitate product or system requirements gathering and analysis
  • Develop critical M&S inputs, including framework definition, requirements analysis, synthesis, systems analysis, and implementation
  • Conduct product or system design analysis translating requirements into valid models and experimental designs for systems of moderate complexity
  • Define/refine internal and external interfaces
  • Develop technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
  • Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements
  • Implement approaches that foster reusability of existing M&S expressions

Additional Responsibilities

  • This position involves applying scientific, engineering, and mathematical concepts to perform critical analysis that will evaluate mission effectiveness and mission performance of next-generation systems and systems-of-systems for the US military.
  • A qualified candidate will actively participate in multi-disciplinary trade studies that address technical and operational issues that involve both near-term and future systems and scenarios. The types of tasks to be performed include systems performance evaluation, requirements analysis, risk assessment, trade space exploration, evaluation of test results, and system performance prediction. These analyses will be used by our customers to define the required force mix of future warfare. A qualified candidate filling this position must be skilled in modeling and simulation, techniques for data reduction and analysis, and be accomplished in the area of software development.
  • For this position, the candidate will use a variety of software tools to perform trade studies regarding system performance while working in concert with a variety of subject matter experts. One of the main tools to be used by this position will be the Advanced Framework for Simulation, Integration, and Modeling (AFSIM).
  • Candidates with a working knowledge of using and modifying this software tool are desired. GTRI also values excellent communication skills, both written and oral; these are essential for this position.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited degree program relevant to this position will be considered. The candidate must have a graduation date of no later than December 2021
  • Excellent analytical and computer skills needed for numerical modeling and data reduction
  • Experience using MATLAB,Python, C++ or other languages to develop modeling, simulation and analysis tools
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, are critical as work often informs decisions at the top levels of the military and intelligence communities

Preferred Qualifications

  • TS/SCI
  • 3 years of experience or expertise in one or more of the following: aerospace systems, operations research, evaluation of current or future kill chains, or intelligence gathering and analysis
  • Experience using or developing operations research modeling and simulation tools such as AFSIM, Suppressor, ESAMS, TAC BRAWLER, TMAP modules, or other equivalent models
  • Experience employing best practices regarding software development. This includes the areas of requirements analysis, code design, and code testing practices
  • Experience employing statistical evaluation, optimization methods, or machine learning techniques in design and analysis tasks

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
