We have an opening for an experienced Systems Engineer Group Leader to lead a multi-disciplinary team in operational concept development, requirements generation, preliminary system design, and performance analysis of advanced laser directed energy (DE) systems. You will collaborate with scientific and engineering personnel, support staff, and senior management to develop and deploy state-of-the art laser systems for Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense Technology (DoDT), and LLNL mission needs. This position is in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Principal Associate Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Lead a multi-disciplinary team including engineers, scientists, and technical staff to achieve specific technical goals relevant to lab mission areas in laser DE systems.
- Define directed energy systems requirements for applications in collaboration with Chief Systems Engineer/Systems Architects on multiple programs, establishing business plans for program development and execution, costing and managing entire projects to budget.
- Develop and guide the execution of strategies that enhance the ability of the lab to address new opportunities in laser-based directed energy applications utilizing advanced technical knowledge of laser propagation, target acquisition/ tracking/ pointing, laser optical, power and/or thermal control sub-systems.
- Provide advanced technical guidance to derive, extend, and maintain reduced-order engineering models from high performance multi-physics computer simulations and integrate into model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tool, capturing the structure, behavior, parametrics, and requirements of advanced laser DE systems.
- Interface directly with management and external sponsors to communicate technical milestones and solicit input from technical leaders in the laser program.
- Communicate results through formal technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate.
- Supervisory responsibilities including staff training and development, conducting performance reviews, ranking, and salary management.
- Plan and oversee highly complex research and development activities and ensure the creation, maintenance and enhancement of underlying core competencies while ensuring all assignments are performed safely in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Responsible for championing projects and for attracting and retaining project funding.
- Develop strategies that enhance the ability of the lab to address new opportunities in photon sciences and laser-based applications.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction for projects to a diverse group of engineers.

Qualifications
- Masters degree in Optical/Electrical Engineering, Systems/Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Significant practical experience and theoretical depth in one or more technical areas including Sensor Management, Command and Control, or Cueing Theory.
- Experience in the development and use of MBSE tools, methods, and techniques, and also CW (continuous wave) and/or laser systems.
- Supervisory experience including ability to plan and guide advanced technical projects including budget analysis and setting timeline deliverables.
- Interpersonal and communications skills necessary to lead a technical team, interact with a diverse set of scientists, and other technical and administrative staff.
- Ability to work independently, with limited guidance, as well as in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Expert communication, facilitation and collaboration skills necessary to present, explain, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors.

In Addition at the SEL.5 Level
- Expert knowledge of laser-based directed energy applications utilizing advanced technical knowledge of laser propagation, target acquisition/ tracking/ pointing, laser optical, power and/or thermal control sub-systems.
- Extensive experience championing, leading, and developing innovative, cutting edge principles, theories and concepts.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction for projects to a diverse group of engineers.

Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Optical/Electrical Engineering, Systems/Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering.
- Prior experience working as a System Engineer in weapon systems development environment and/or experience with class 4 lasers, optics layout, and engineering.
- SysML modeling and simulation experience, with Cameo Enterprise Architecture (or Magic Draw) preferred.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
