Job Description

The GTRI Robotic Systems and Technology Branch is looking for graduates in robotics, computer science, computer/electrical/mechanical engineering, or related fields specializing in robotic planning, control, and software development for agile robotics. You will be joining a growing robotics branch and division, and responsibilities may include research into new and innovative algorithms, rapid prototyping, systems integration, and software engineering with a specific focus on agile robotic applications.

Our branch has an immediate opening for a researcher to perform collaborative research in areas ranging from space habitats, to warehouse automation, to bio-manufacturing. The common thread that ties all of these efforts together is the ability to robustly implement low-level robotic control and compose these control strategies into complex behaviors. Responsibilities include algorithm development, test, and debug, along with system integration.

We are looking for candidates who are self-motivated, have demonstrated C/C++ programming skills, follow software engineering best practices, and a have a strong mathematical foundation and problem solving skills.

This opportunity is within the Aerospace, Transportation and Advanced Systems Lab (ATAS). ATAS conducts research for government and industry customers in industrial robotics, medical robotics, unmanned systems, aerodynamics, radar and weapons systems, food processing technology, and modeling of social systems.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field and four (4) years of relevant full time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral program relevant to this position will be considered
  • The position involves the generation of research reports, publications, proposals, and briefs to customers thus requiring excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ideal candidate will have hands on experience with state-of-the-art algorithms on autonomous robot manipulators and ground based robotic systems.
  • Ideal candidate will also have experience with micro-controllers for general automation projects.
  • Strong software skills and experience with C++ are required.
  • Applicants must be US citizens capable and be able to obtain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS)
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with biological or medical robotic applications
  • Experience with systems integration
  • Experience with real-time embedded software
  • Experience with version control systems such as GIT

Proven research experience in at least one of these areas is desirable:

  • Fluid handling robots
  • Robotic arms and/or grasping
  • Multirobot collaboration
  • Path planning and navigation
  • Behavior based robotics
  • Optimal control and estimation
  • Robotic task planning

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
