Job Description

The Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) RF Photonics and Advanced Materials (RFPAM) Division is currently seeking qualified candidates for a Microwave Photonics Technologist. This position will provide engineering support in electro-optic design, field support activities, product qualification, and electronic-photonic prototype development. RFPAM's research is performed in the areas of RF Photonic Systems, Microelectronic Systems, Advanced Materials, and Jammers and Decoys.

The candidate should be familiar with photonic components such as modulators, lasers, fiber, and photodiodes, including their environmental operating constraints and control circuitry. The candidate should also be familiar with RF components such as amplifiers, filters, mixers, and detectors, including their environmental operating constraints and control circuitry.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Technologist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Consideration will be given to candidates that do not have a Master's degree with 10+ years of experience performing in roles that align with the responsibilities and requirements defined for this position.
  • The candidate should demonstrate experience in the design, layout, assembly, and testing of RF electronic and photonic prototypes.
  • Practical experience and design with microwave photonic components (modulators, lasers, fiber, EDFAs and photodiodes)
  • Practical experience and design with RF components
  • Experience using common optical test equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers)
  • Experience with PCB layout tools (Altium Designer, Cadence, or similar)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in applied research and development
  • Demonstrated experience in system engineering of optical systems and links
  • Demonstrated experience in leading engineering teams and managing projects
  • Excellent communication skills
