We have an opening for a technician/technologist. You will work under close to general supervision to provide basic to general technical support to the microscopy and metallography sample preparation laboratories and be a member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting characterization of a wide variety materials, including metals, ceramics, and radioactive materials. This position is in the Ultrafast Materials Science group in the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the 504.1 or 504.2 level depending on your qualifications.Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide basic technical support to scientists and senior personnel in the microscopy service center.
- Prepare a wide variety of samples for various microscopy techniques, including use of precision lapping and polishing techniques, and repair and maintain instrumentation and mechanical systems.
- Conduct measurements; operate laboratory equipment; assemble, repair, and maintain experimental apparatus.
- Work as an integral part of a results-oriented team on an ongoing basis.
- Work on small projects which involve well-defined tasks and methodologies within a project.
- Solve basic technical problems, analyze and interpret basic data, and report results to principal investigators.
- Document work in lab notebooks and informal reports.
- Properly handle laboratory and radioactive waste.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the 504.2 Level
- Provide solutions to moderately complex technical problems, such as designing and fabricating mechanical systems.
- Write and maintain safety documentation for laboratory work.

- AA/AS in science, engineering, or chemistry,or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of basic microscopy (including optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy) and/or x-ray diffraction techniques.
- Knowledge of basic sample preparation and polishing techniques.
- Computer skills to work with a variety of software programs and databases.
- Effective analytical skills to trouble-shoot and solve problems and recommend solutions.
- Working knowledge of mathematics.
- Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work both independently and in a diverse team environment with scientific and technical personnel.
In Addition at the 504.2 Level
- Experience working in a chemistry or materials science laboratory.
- Ability operate scientific analytical instrumentation.
- Ability to work on multiple projects while meeting programmatic deadlines.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience using scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam, and/or x-ray diffraction techniques.
- General knowledge of mechanical equipment, such as vacuum systems and laboratory instrumentation and experience working with radioactive materials.
- General knowledge of chemistry and materials science, and/or an AS or certificate in electron microscopy.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
