Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

The Biosciences and Biotechnology Division (BBTD) of the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research fellow in the area of membrane science and technology. The research will focus on the design and fabrication of microporous reactive membranes, and characterization of their transport properties and catalytic activity. The ideal candidate has expertise in MOFs, COFs or other porous network synthesis, layer-by-layer deposition, membrane fabrication and liquid/gas transport characterization, and analytical techniques such as gas chromatography, mass spectroscopy, and NMR. The selected candidate will work with a dynamic interdisciplinary team of scientists and will report to the BioNanomaterials Group Leader.

Essential Duties
- Conduct research in the field of catalytic microporous membrane design, fabrication, and characterization.
- Design, implement, and analyze experiments for the characterization of gas/liquid transport properties and catalytic activity of nanostructured membranes.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from research at seminars, technical meetings, national and international conferences.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment both at LLNL and in other national laboratories and universities to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related field, with emphasis in synthesis of microporous networks.
- Experience with microporous materials synthesis and characterization.
- Experience with microporous materials incorporation into membranes.
- Experience with characterization of membrane gas/vapor/liquid transport and reactivity for selected species
- Experience with layer-by-layer coating techniques.
- Ability to understand and analyze performed experiments.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in synthetic chemistry and surface modification.
- Experience with vapor-phase polymer deposition techniques.
- Experience with fabrics design for protective clothing applications.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
