Job Description

Georgia Tech Research Institutes's (GTRI) Trusted Microelectronics Program Office (TMPO) seeks a microelectronics or FPGA researcher and/or digital design engineer for a research group focused on the development of novel, cutting-edge capabilities in the area of microelectronics security and trust.

TMPO researches microelectronic applications, CAD tools, architectures, and materials to evaluate the security, trust, and reliability of microelectronic devices and the critical systems which rely upon them. TMPO develops tools and techniques in the areas of assurance, anti-tamper, and reliability for FPGAs, ASICs, SoCs, microcontrollers, and other microelectronics. TMPO employees are Research Faculty of Georgia Tech and have the opportunity for dual appointments and teaching positions with other departments of the university. TMPO is a division of GTRI's cyber security lab which contains 300+ engineers and scientists and represents >10% of the total research award funding at Georgia Tech.

Researchers in this posting will be responsible for aspects of microelectronics hardware research or development, to include researching hardware architectures and devices, developing solutions for hardware-oriented security and trust, and performing advanced research and experimentation into intersection of reconfigurable technologies, custom architectures, software/CAD design frameworks, and novel high-performance acceleration architectures. Researchers will have the opportunity to develop FPGA code to control hardware in real time and support complex experimentation. Researchers in this position will also be given the opportunity to identify and characterize microelectronics hardware security concerns and design and implement mechanisms to enhance the security of hardware designs.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Material Sciences, or Electrical Engineering.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Material Sciences, or Electrical Engineering and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Material Sciences, or Electrical Engineering and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Material Sciences, or Electrical Engineering.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • Candidate should have a strong understanding of embedded systems, hardware design, digital logic design, and various microelectronic architectures
  • Experience working with at least one major FPGA vendor design tool suite, e.g., Xlinx Vivado, Altera Quartus Tool Suites, Microsemi Libero, and familiarity with standard FPGA design flow (Synthesis, Place and Route, Simulation, Timing Analysis, Floor Planning)
  • Competency designing hardware leveraging at least one industry standard HDL language, e.g. Verilog, System Verilog, VHDL
  • Basic experience with either low-level (C/C++, Rust) programming OR high-level scripting languages (e.g. Python, TCL)
  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Any experience performing research in the field of re-programmable technologies to include published journal papers, conference talks, workshops, and/or research posters
  • Experience working with, and developing, low-level Computer-aided Design (CAD) tools
  • Experience with hardware/software co-design and high-level synthesis methodologies
  • FPGA circuit and architecture design experience (routing, logic cell design, overlays, partial reconfiguration architectures, security boundaries, etc)
  • Knowledge of hardware security principles
  • Working with hardware-enforced trusted execution environments
  • Experience working with computational acceleration techniques leveraging hardware
