We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the interactions between bacteria and cyanobacteria to understand fundamental elemental cycling in lakes. You will examine bacteria-controlled metabolic changes in cyanobacterial physiology using omics, stable isotope imaging, and microbial community characterization. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.Essential Duties
- Design and conduct experiments with microbial communities in symbiotic relationships with cyanobacteria.
- Characterize the rates of elemental exchange between bacteria and cyanobacteria using stable isotopes and mass spectrometry integrated with physiology and genomic techniques.
- Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems and willingness to learn new techniques in microbial ecology.
- Document research and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals
- Present results within the DOE community and at national and international conferences.- Maintain effective communications with scientific efforts internal and external to the Laboratory
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, Security and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in biology, microbial ecology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience in microbial interaction research through controlled laboratory experiments or complex community manipulations.
- Experience in analysis of 16S rRNA community data and/or metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, or metaproteomics, or other analytical methods.
- Experience with stable isotopes or radioisotopes helpful but not required.- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.- Experience with cultivation of cyanobacteria and/or bacteria.- Analytical experience with microscopy and other single-cell techniques.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
