We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the interactions between bacteria and algae to understand fundamental elemental cycling in aquatic environments. You will examine bacteria-controlled metabolic changes in algal physiology using omics, stable isotope imaging, and microbial community characterization. This position is in the Environmental Isotope Systems group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Design and conduct experiments with microbial communities in symbiotic relationships with algae.
- Characterzie the rates of elemental exchange between bacteria and algae using stable isotopes and mass spectrometry integrated with physiology and genomic techniques
- Perform sample and data analysis and interpret results.
- Document research, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.

- Perform other duties as assigned, and willingness to learn new techniques in microbial ecology.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in biology, microbial ecology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, or a related field.
- Experience in microbial interaction research through controlled laboratory experiments or complex community manipulations.
- Experience in analysis of 16S rRNA community data and/or metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, or metaproteomics, or other analytical methods.
- Ability to perform independent research and use a scientific approach to solve problems.
- Effective ability to collaborate with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds and ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.

- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications
-Experience with stable isotopes or radioisotopes.

This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum ofthree years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
