We are seeking an extraordinary hands-on Mechatronics Engineer to join our Recycling Operations team, focusing on developing and scaling advanced recycling technical solutions and being an all-around maker to support technology development.

  • Strong ability to design, spec, integrate, program, test, and troubleshoot UL508A industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMI's, cabinet hardware, VFD's, starters, I/O, ladder logic).
  • Experience integrating safety critical systems and interlocks
  • Proficient in industrial control system network design
  • Proven hands-on experience applying (2D, 3D) machine vision learning techniques to build models integrated into mechanical systems or applications.
  • Strong software development skills with proficiency in Python and C++.
  • Knowledge or familiarity of ML algorithms (deep learning, classification, clustering, PyTorch, Caffe, MXNet, TensorFlow)
  • Expertise with multiple sensor types and methodologies such as sensor fusion
  • Proficiency in developing IoT (MQTT) systems and applying to industrial controls and robotics including data visualization (ex: Ignition)
  • Experience with Arduino and Raspberry Pi application development
  • Experience using 3D CAD (Inventor, NX) to review and design mechanical components and assemblies, and build accurate engineering part drawings using GD&T practices.
  • Extensive hands-on working experience architecting, designing and selecting robotic systems. Proficiency with one or more major brand (ABB, KUKA, Fanuc, etc.) six-axis industrial robots, their programming languages (RAPID, KRL, Karel, ROS, etc.), offline programming (OLP) packages, I/O maps, or equivalents.
  • Working experience with mechanical fixturing and pneumatics.
  • Hands-on fabrication or machine-shop experience with tools such as 3-axis mill, lathe, CNC, 3D printer, laser-cutting machines.
  • Experience designing, building, and troubleshooting functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing, and actuation, from selecting drivers to onboard compute platforms
  • Ability to drive root cause/corrective action and process optimization activities to closure efficiently with proper design of experiment (DOE) practices.
  • Experience with SQL programming, Linux, and database design a plus
  • MS Office, Keynote
  • Overseas travel required (~20%) when conditions allow.

Description

Recycling Operations partners with a variety of different engineering and operations teams and supports development of sophisticated recycling solutions for a variety of products and materials. This Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for delivering projects from end-to-end: conceptualization, design, proof-of-concept, build, de-bug, SOP's, and final deployment. Most projects include industrial automation systems, robots (6 axis, SCARA, collaborative, gantry), machine vision (cameras, lighting, and programming), motion control (including actuators, motors, pneumatics), sensors, encoders, real time operating systems, and data acquisition systems (IoT) to develop advanced recycling capabilities. Certain projects require work with integrators, suppliers, contract manufacturers, and internal partners. You will be expected to conduct project presentations to a wide range of audiences.

Education & Experience

BS or MS degree in Engineering (Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation, Robotics, or equivalent) with 8+ years of hands-on experience in mechatronics developing, prototyping, and applying automation, industrial controls systems, IoT, AI machine vision, and robotics into cohesive and innovative solutions.
