The Energetics and Propulsion Department is an engineering organization in the Mechanical Products Team. This organization is responsible for the full spectrum of warhead, fuzing, and propulsion designs/technology, including power systems, ignition, and all other weapon initiation safety systems technology. This individual would develop architectures, top-level design concepts, requirements, and performance modeling for thermal and lithium ion batteries. This position is located in Tucson, AZ. The ideal person will:
Apply highly advanced Power Source technologies with a focus on thermal batteries using scientific principles, theories and concepts to the systems of integration of Power Sources into missile systems, projectiles, kinetic interceptors, directed energy, unmanned vehicles and space vehicles.
Position will involve both development and production programs across Raytheon Missiles & Defense Product Lines.
An Electrical and/or Chemical engineering academic background with experience of batteries specifically thermal and Li-Ion battery development, qualification and testing.
Strong technical writing skills with writing technical data packages, data analysis, excellent verbal skills and the ability to review manufacturing processes and problem resolution as well as working directly with subcontractors on the design and manufacturing of Power Source solutions
Work in a collaborative environment with programs and the Energetic and Propulsion Department on the development of power solutions. Manage battery development and production projects, review and disposition subcontract data and change requests, and oversee supplier operations
Develop and deliver technical presentations to programs, the Energetic and Propulsion department and government agencies. Frequently interface with programs to identify user needs
Willing to travel to subcontractor and test facilities for program support
NOTE: Please Note: this position can be a Sr. Mechanical Engineer II I (G09) or Principal Mechanical Engineer (G10), based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
Required Experience, Skills & Education:
Bachelors Degree in engineering disciplines, natural or physical sciences, mathematics, or physics
For Sr. Mechanical Engineer II: Six (6) years of experience of battery technology (thermal and/or Li-Ion)MS and 4 years, Ph.D. and 2 years
For Principal Mechanical Engineer: Eight (8) experience with battery technology (thermal and/or Li-Ion)MS and 6 years, Ph.D and 4 years
Experience in working with or managing thermal and Li-Ion battery suppliers
U.S. Citizenship is required
Desired Experience, Skills and Education:
Advanced degree in aforementioned disciplines. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard
12 plus years of directly related experience in battery technology
Experience with RCC tailoring, NAVSEA S9310-AQ-SAF-010 and UN 38.3 testing
Specific experience in the thermal and Li-Ion battery manufacturing, design characteristics, safety testing, and managing development and qualification activities
Ability to perform Power Source trade studies evaluating different electrochemistries, estimate cost and schedule
Supplier collaboration experience and oversight generating specifications and statements of work (SOW)
Experience in business development and technology road mapping
Demonstrated success as a team leader
Excellent written and verbal skills
Working knowledge or experience with either missile design or development, production support and integration
Experience with Military Missile systems and electronics
Experience with the proposal capture process (development of compliant basis of estimates and ROMs)
Familiarity with the Estimate at Complete Process
Demonstrated team player, with excellent collaboration and mentoring skills
Advocate for process improvement (e.g., CMMI, R6s), team builder and able to build strong relationships and effectively partner with internal and external resources.
