We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer/Opto-Mechanical Engineer. You will be responsible for the engineering and design of various target diagnostics for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). You will provide engineering for new additions, upgrades to existing hardware, overall coordination, maintenance, and repair of opto-mechanical systems. Your work will also involve project management. These positions are in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Develop conceptual designs of opto-mechanical systems, test prototypes, and final diagnostic assembly.
- Work on moderately complex designs and apply advanced principles to a wide variety of hardware design and analysis projects.
- Apply system engineering processes to define requirements, manage risk, analyze design failures to determine cause, and recommend corrective action.
- Utilize a systems approach, present project plans which include analysis, error budgets, value engineering and schedule to subject expert experts and stakeholders of design reviews.
- Provide detailed cost and schedule estimates and use work breakdown concepts for project planning and implementation.
- Develop detailed fabrication specifications and interface with vendors.
- Collaborate within a team consisting of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, coordinators, and procurement personnel to resolve complex problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Apply advanced engineering solutions and technical analysis to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues.
- Provide bi-weekly project status updates to management and discuss project challenges and proposed mitigations.
- Provide technical direction to small teams and work as a primary technical contact on multi-disciplinary teams. Interface with multiple expert groups and present engineering solutions and unique design approach throughout entire project phase.

- Bachelors degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering/Opto-Mechanical Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Experience designing moderately complex hardware to tight requirements, including, high precision, defining system error budgets, high stability, excellent repeatability of motion, tight control of materials, and optical alignment techniques.
- Experience with system engineering practices, formally managing requirements, and ability to lead independent studies on complex problems.
- Experience analyzing tolerances in parts and component stack-ups.
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical hardware design principles and familiarity with current fabrication processes.
- Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary project team that may include engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators.
- Ability to perform and document mechanical engineering analyses such as structural, thermal, or fluid analyses.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Significant experience identifying, defining, and solving multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner.
- Advanced knowledge of engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering/Opto-Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience with complex optical systems and knowledge of optical mounting techniques and best practices.
- Experience working within a nuclear, military, or highly technical laboratory environment.
- Experience leading small multidisciplinary engineering projects to completion.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
