The Mechanical Analysis and Test Department is responsible for ensuring the structural integrity of all RMD Products. From the preliminary concept to fielded weapon support, A&T delivers innovative and robust structural analysis solutions utilizing classical fundamental & proprietary empirically based techniques to state of the art finite element methods and commercial computer codes; all complimented and validated by test executed in a manner to ensure cost effective yet technically balanced solutions.
A Test Engineer for the Mechanical Analysis and Test Department will be responsible for planning, writing test plans and reports, setting up, conducting and post-processing test data from typical structural tests including but not limited to: modal surveys, vibration and shock testing, and strength/displacement tests. The individual will have a knowledge and background in structural analysis (classical methods and FE modeling) and be able to use test data to complete analysis activities. The individual will be an integral part of the Mechanical Analysis and Test Department, and will support both engineers in the department and company program personnel directly as needed.
This position can be Salary Grade G07 or G08 based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position.
The individual will conduct the following tasks as necessary:
Work both individually and in a team of engineers to execute structural testing activities
Develop and write test plans and reports
Conduct tests to acquire needed data with minimal supervision
Discern quality of test data captured in the field to determine if retests are required
Post-process test data to produce meaningful results
Be able to use processed data to develop specifications and inputs to structural models
Train and mentor peers within the department on testing activities as needed
Required qualifications:
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Ability to travel frequently and on short notice (typically, 50% of time is spent travelling for tests)
Ability to obtain DoD secret clearance or higher
Required skills:
Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in mechanical testing or structural or thermal analysis
Knowledge of structural testing instrumentation including but not limited to: accelerometers, shock transducers, strain gauges, laser vibrometers, LVDTs, load cells and associated filters and ancillary equipment (cables, wires, connectors, etc)
Knowledge of classical structural analysis methods and theories
Knowledge of basic structural dynamic principles including Mechanical Vibration and Shock; shock and vibration profile development; characterization of mechanical systems using input and response measurements
Experience with data acquisition software
Knowledge of basic tools required to install instrumentation (torque wrenches, soldering irons)
Ability to handle up to 50 lbs of equipment with assist and up to 20 lbs of equipment with no assist.
Desired Qualifications/Skills:
Experience with Dewesoft, LMS, Jaguar, and/or Star Modal
Ability to travel (both domestically and internationally) as needed
Knowledge of Matlab programming
Proficiency with any or all of the following: ANSYS Classic, ANSYS Workbench, Patran/Nastran
Ability to work well with a diverse set of engineers and technicians in multiple organizations both inside of Raytheon and with suppliers
