We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer in support of hypersonics programs. Activities include basic research, early feasibility studies, prototyping, ground testing, and flight testing. You will contribute engineering solutions for guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) work in support of these programs, from systems requirements trades through algorithm design to hardware integration and test data analyses. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Support concept trade studies and derive GN&C requirements for future systems.
- Develp GN&C software architecture with robust and elegant algorithms
- Employ software development best practices including version control, unit testing, and thorough documentation.

Quantify uncertainties through Monte Carlo and other statistical methods.

Validate models using flight test data.
- Contribute as a member of a team with other analysts, code developers, engineers, and subject matter experts to solve technical problems.
- Report technical approaches and publish as appropriate.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Aerospace Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of guidance law development and state estimation, control system optimization, and sensor fusion.
- Experience in process automation and data reduction.
- Experience exercising independent judgment in determining optimal techniques, methods, and evaluation criteria for answering engineering questions.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

Desired Qualifications
- Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering or related field.

Experience in one or more of the following areas: six degree of freedom simulations, trajectory estimation, Kalman filtering, hardware/software integration, verification and validation.
- Programming experience, especially in C++, Fortran, Python, Java, and/or Matlab.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
