We have an opening for a Mechanical Engineer. You will provide engineering solutions for the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate and its associated Programs to include precision laser systems enabling scientific exploration of the frontiers in fusion ignition, national security, astrophysics, materials science, nuclear science, and other scientific disciplines. You will contribute to conceptual design, systems engineering, manufacturing, assembly, analysis, optics engineering, precision engineering, and operations. This position is in the Laser Science Engineering Organization (LSEO), within the Engineering Directorate.

The position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Derive engineering requirements, develop moderately complex to complex conceptual designs, perform supporting analysis, conduct design reviews, and incorporate input as necessary from broadly defined instructions.
- Oversee the detail design process, part fabrication, system assembly, and testing.
- Prepare supporting safety notes, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, procedures, and engineering documentation to support moderately complex to complex designs.
- Generate and communicate detailed plans, schedules, and budgets for project activities.
- Collaborate within a team consisting of scientists, engineers, designers, technicians, coordinators, and procurement personnel to resolve moderately complex to complex engineering problems.
- Interface with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory to complete various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Provide independent engineering knowledge to resolve complex technical and programmatic issues which may not be well defined. Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to evaluate results appropriate to meet operational requirements.
- Perform independent technical tasks as primary technical contact to provide solutions for a diverse range of complex issues.
- Oversee and mentor other personnel.

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevantexperience.
- Broad experience of two or more of the following: engineering hardware design, FEA structural analysis, systems engineering, manufacturing techniques, optical engineering, or precision engineering.
- Comprehensive knowledge of and/or experience with moderately complex to complex design principles.
- Comprehensive knowledge of material properties and manufacturing methods.
- Experience working effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience using standard project management practices.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level
- Significant knowledge and experience of complex engineering hardware design, fabrication, or testing processes and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
- Experience overseeing the activities of and mentoring other personnel.

Desired Qualifications
- Ability to interpret specifications and mechanical drawings including Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience working in an environment with stringent safety and security policies.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
