Hetch Hetchy Water & Power, a division of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, plans to advertise multiple Mechanical and Electrical Engineering positions to join the in-house engineering team.  HHWP is located in Moccasin, CA, approximately 30 miles outside of Yosemite National Park.  The positions will require the specialized expertise of mechanical and electrical engineers that have experience working on hydropower and water control assets including: powerhouses, generators, transformers, high voltage transmission lines, large diameter valves, gates, and switchyards, and substations.

The SFPUC, a department of the City and County of San Francisco, was created by the San Francisco Charter in 1932 to oversee the operations and management of City and County public utilities.  The SFPUC delivers reliable, high quality drinking water to 2.5 million Bay Area residents in four counties, collects and treats wastewater and storm water in San Francisco and generates Hydroelectric and renewable power for San Francisco’s municipal facilities and public services.

The positions will support: (1) the system integration of large capital projects, (2) maintenance & regulatory projects, and (3) emergency projects.

System Integration of Large Capital Projects.  Currently, HHWP is in the beginning of a large capital improvement program which is scheduled to complete nearly $1B worth of capital improvement projects on the existing hydropower and water conveyance system over the next 10 years.  One of the primary responsibilities of the in-house engineering staff is to participate in all phases of the projects, from planning through construction to ensure that the projects can be constructed within the allowable system outages and integrated with the existing infrastructure.

Maintenance & Regulatory Projects.  HHWP manages multiple programs to meet annual maintenance and regulatory requirements, including the dam safety program, the large diameter pipeline management program, and various maintenance programs within the powerhouses and switchyards.  Through these programs, the in-house engineering staff is responsible to collect, record, trend and report data to understand the overall performance of the system and forecast future maintenance and capital needs.

Emergency Projects. During an emergency, the in-house engineering team is the primary resource to perform rapid engineering assessments of the hydropower system.  Additionally, the in-house staff may be called upon to perform the design, serving as the Engineer of Record, for interim repair projects that are necessary to rapidly address the associated risks to the water conveyance and hydropower system.

There will be multiple positions at all levels, including Engineer In Training (EIT) and Professional Engineer (PE) levels.  If you would like to be notified and considered for future openings, forward your resume to Jose Rodriguez,JARodriguez@sfwater.org.
