The Recycling Innovation team supports this effort by developing industry-leading technology to recover and reuse more materials from end-of-use devices, such as Daisy. Apple's Material Recovery Lab is the cornerstone of our technology development and critical to achieving Apple's closed loop supply chain goal. It also serves as the host of our Material Recovery Lab Intern Program, where we share the experience of applying engineering skills to environmental challenges with students.

Key Qualifications

  • Must be a self starter and independent worker with innovation, integrity and attention to details
  • Experience working and managing machine shop and large factory equipment, including designing and executing maintenance plans, standard operating procedures, equipment user training plans, and Environment Health and Safety reporting
  • Passion for working with and developing students, preferably in a technical setting
  • Proven track record to execute on ideas through mechanical design and prototyping, and basic electronics and/or software implementations (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Arduino, DIY robotics)
  • Experience in design and execution of experiments to generate meaningful data and recommendations
  • Comfortable presenting technical information to internal and external audiences in an engaging, clear, and compelling manner

Description

Responsible for all aspects of leading the Material Recovery Lab. This consists of two main focuses. The first includes independently conducting project work in the lab of new technologies and benchmark the performance of existing ones, defining and performing the daily activities needed to keep all equipment clean, safe, and ready to use as needed for project support. The second focus is supervising the Material Recovery Lab Intern Program to ensure interning students are successful in their work, and develop technical and professional skills during their time with us. The candidate will work closely with multi-functional partners to research and develop new recycling technologies, prove their feasibility and utility, and enable their deployment.
- Run all day to day activities at the Material Recovery Lab, including Environment Health and Safety requirements, permitting and compliance record keeping, training, and maintenance of equipment
- Combine industry research with hands-on experimentation to design and execute technology exploration plans
- Design and build process prototypes to explore the feasibility of proposed solutions and advise the design of deployable systems
- Generate required documentation to gain final solution details and transfer knowledge to deployment partners
- Lead the identification and selection of suitable intern projects, and supervise the intern cohorts to ensure they have a successful internship and develop professionally
- Create and lead presentations on the work of the Material Recovery Lab to keep partners advised of progress and to fuel continued innovation
- Identify internal and external collaboration opportunities to grow the impact of the Material Recovery Lab and its ability to positively give to environmental needs
- Occasional travel (10%) to attend team meetings and to support equipment deployments

Education & Experience
- BS or MS Engineering Degree
- 5+ years in a role with responsibility for the operation and management of multiple pieces of processing equipment. Work or volunteer experience in a mentorship, talent development capacity.

Additional Requirements

  • - Experience managing technical operations of a machine shop, manufacturing facility, recycling facility, technical lab or industrial processing plant
  • - Proven passion for working with students in a development or mentorship capacity
  • - Demonstrated ability to design and build prototypes to test and improve ideas
  • - Proficient in Design of Experiment fundamentals to explore feasibility of new ideas, or identify the root cause of observed issues, including sampling methodologies
  • - Ability to communicate information in a clear and engaging way to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • - Demonstrated interest in continually learning new technical and soft skills to grow your abilities, and comfort taking on projects that are outside of your area of expertise
  • - Basic understanding of electronics recycling and material recovery (metallurgical) processes
