Reporting to the Chair, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department, this position will oversee the Machine Shop daily operations to include customer orders, equipment upkeep and maintenance, managing and supervising staff, materials and inventory control, business processes, training, and overall logistics management. This position will effectively work with faculty, students, commercial customers, and administrative staff from academic and research units. 

Job responsibilities include:

Responsible for planning, coordinating and directing machine shop operations. 

Responsible for ensuring daily production cycles are met from part design to fabrication.

Responsible for the inventory, distribution, and storage of materials as well as examine, purchase, and oversee the usage of additional new machines as needed. 

Responsible for the flow of incoming orders and outgoing finished products to ensure customers receive products and services on time. 

Responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating employees and students to include the development and implementation of students’ training courses.

Responsible for preparing technician and staff work schedules and ensure workers follow OSHA and all other safety rules. 

Prepare financial and administrative reports for upper management as needed. 

Supervise machine techs with operating, maintaining installing, calibrating, and servicing machine shop equipment to include CNC lathes, mills, saws and 3-D printers. 

Supervises machine techs with performing computer aided design and computer manufacturing (CAD/CAM) tasks.  

Works with administrative, research, and academic unit staff and faculty to ensure resources are available and projects are finished on a timely basis. 

Supervises machine techs manufacturing parts based on computer models, sketches, detailed drawings, or other concepts.  

Supervises machine techs with using Smart/Advanced Manufacturing environments. Other duties as assigned.



 

Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 8+ years of relevant experience or a Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in academic environment is preferred.

Experience with operating, maintaining installing, calibrating, and servicing machine shop equipment to include CNC lathes, mills, saws, and 3-D printers. 

Extensive knowledge of computer aided design and computer manufacturing (CAD/CAM). 

Have experience with parts manufacturing based on computer models, sketches, detailed drawings, or other concepts.

Knowledge of and experience with Smart/Advanced Manufacturing environments.

Experience with logistics operations and business management.

Excellent customer service skills and verbal and written communication skills.
