Job Description

This is a part-time student position 15-20 hrs per week.

Machine Services student employees will train to run shop equipment, manufacture or finish parts made to the print provided, repair and service equipment, engineer small projects, modify mechanical drawings to meet shop standards, test and evaluate assemblies, and work in conjunction with other MSD employees to develop new manufacturing processes. Administrative responsibilities may include filing, reporting, sorting, or analyzing data to help better manage the shop. Other work may be necessary from time to time.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant/Research Assistant

• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field from an accredited university
• A strong mechanical aptitude
• Must have a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA
• Computer proficiency
• Analytical and Critical thinking, Accountability, Strategic thinking and planning, Working in teams; Attention to detail, Customer service focused
• Must be able to communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications

  • Self-motivated, high energy, and strong time management skills
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with other teams and groups
  • Ability to think creatively, problem solve, and innovate
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills
  • Ability to apply test driven development

Hours per Week


10–20 hours per week

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
