We are seeking a Licensing Executive Professional to support licensing of Intellectual Property. You will be responsible for ensuring return on investment for Sandia's intellectual property portfolio through licensing and commercialization of Sandia technologies.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Negotiating licensing agreements and anticipate, understand, and react to potential and current sponsor or customer needs.
  • Identifying, developing, and implementing near-term and long-term strategies relating to the development of technologies, services, follow-on programs, or industries.
  • Achieving commercialization revenue targets.
  • Providing technical and scientific advice to customers, sponsors, and staff/management responding to technology commercialization related questions, issues, and problems.
  • Managing on-going customer and sponsor relationships for Sandia for mission benefit.
  • Identifying, arranging, and managing sales calls.

Department Description:

The Business Development and Intellectual Property Management Department 1932 is responsible for business development support to Sandia's Mission Areas and Program Management Units (PMUs). The department works in teams of technical and business professionals to develop management of technology, marketing and capture plans. These teams then implement the plans with the goal of developing programs and partnerships that support mission work. The department is also responsible for managing Sandia’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio and for negotiating and consummating license agreements. In cooperation with others in the Partnerships team, the department enables beneficial partnerships to deploy Sandia's IP to industry, universities, and state and federal agencies. The department also provides business and competitive intelligence to support leadership decision making.

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.



  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering related field PLUS a graduate degree in a science, engineering, or legal field
  • Five years’ related experience
  • Experience successfully identifying partners, and negotiating and executing license agreements for advanced technologies (patents and software) in a multitude of national security areas
  • Experience working with inventors, legal and companies to execute licensing agreements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance


  • PhD in Science or Engineering field
  • Track record of delivering commercialization results in a licensing position (e.g. achieves commercialization revenue targets).
  • Knowledge of and experience with state-of-the-art licensing advanced technologies and management of technology processes

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
