We have two openings for Laser Systems Engineers/Systems Architects to guide the development of advanced high energy laser (HEL) systems for national security or defense missions. You will interact with scientific and engineering personnel, support staff, and senior management. This position is in the Laser Science and Systems Engineering Program in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Principal (NIF & PS) Directorate.

Essential Duties
- Define HEL system requirements flow-down from mission requirements using subject matter expertise.
- Leverage systems engineering best practices to guide highly complex systems design and risk mitigation activities, including determination and documentation of technical objectives, Concept of Operations (ConOps), requirements, interfaces, and risk mitigation plans which require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors.
- Lead the development and application of integrated system models to assess and quantify HEL design trade space against system performance requirements.
- Lead the HEL architecture development and track status of critical Technical Performance Metrics (TPMs) and Knowledge Points (KPs).
- Develop requirements validation and verification plans as well as commissioning test procedures.
- Lead HEL testing and commissioning activities.
- Direct technical tasks and projects and influence the technical direction of a broad team of systems engineers, hardware engineers and analysts utilizing highly advanced knowledge and skills.
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Masters degree in Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, Mathematics or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Substantial experience in the design, development and fielding of HEL systems including development of Concept of Operations (ConOps).
- Expert knowledge of HEL system efficacy and its dependence on laser system design, beam control design, beam director design, control system design, considerations for system safety and ruggedness, etc., as well as detailed knowledge of specific highly complex HEL systems to understand how changes in one part of a system can impact the rest of the system.
- Substantial experience with system and subsystem activation, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Highly advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills to anticipate, identify, and independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions.
- Expert verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, prepare and present scientific and high quality research papers and provide advice to management.
- Experience working independently, as well as establishing and maintaining working relationship with all levels of the organization in a team, with minimal direction in a driven environment, including customers, users, and other peer groups.
- Substantial experience leading and collaborating with diverse technical teams to achieve goals.

Desired Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, Mathematics or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Experience as a lead systems engineer or systems architect for programs involving the field testing or operational assessment of HEL weapons systems with domain expertise in government development and procurement programs, capabilities, etc.
- Experience writing proposals and authoring technical volumes.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
