For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

LLNL is seeking experienced Systems Engineers with laser science and technology backgrounds to lead the design, development and implementation of high energy laser (HEL) systems for national security or defense missions.  You will serve as a technical lead responsible for HEL systems design and risk mitigation activities, developing and applying integrated system models to assess and quantify HEL designs against requirements and leading HEL architecture development.  You will be responsible for directing technical tasks and projects and influencing the technical direction of a broad team of engineers and analysts.  This position is in the Laser Science and Systems Engineering Program in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Principal (NIF & PS) Directorate.
 
Essential Duties
- Define HEL system requirements flow-down from mission requirements.
- Leverage systems engineering best practices to guide systems design and risk mitigation activities, including determination and documentation of technical objectives, Concept of Operations (ConOps), requirements, interfaces, and risk mitigation plans which require in-depth analysis of multiple tangible and intangible factors.
- Lead the development and application of integrated system models to assess and quantify HEL design trade space against system performance requirements.
- Lead the HEL architecture development and track status of critical Technical Performance Metrics (TPMs) and Knowledge Points (KPs).
- Develop requirements validation and verification plans as well as commissioning test procedures.
- Lead HEL testing and commissioning activities.
- Direct technical tasks and projects and influence the technical direction of a broad team of systems engineers, hardware engineers and analysts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

- Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Engineering, Physics, Optical Sciences, Mathematics or related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.  
- Significant experience in the design, development and fielding of HEL systems including development of ConOps.
- Expert knowledge of HEL system efficacy and its dependence on laser system design, beam control design, beam director design, control system design, considerations for system safety and ruggedness, etc., as well as detailed knowledge of specific highly complex HEL systems to understand how changes in one part of a system can impact the rest of the system.
- Substantial experience with system and subsystem activation, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Highly advanced problem-solving and decision-making skills to anticipate, identify, and independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions.
- Expert verbal and written communication skills needed to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, document work, prepare and present scientific and high quality research papers and provide advice to management.
- Experience working independently, as well as establishing and maintaining working relationship with all levels of the organization in a team, with minimal direction in a driven environment, including customers, users, and other peer groups.
- Substantial experience leading and collaborating with diverse technical teams to achieve goals.
