We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the investigation of chemical processes and hydrodynamics using a variety of laser-based spectroscopic techniques. This work will include generating plasmas with bench-scale and facility-scale laser platforms and fielding in-situ emission and absorption spectroscopy to study the chemistry of materials under extreme conditions. Additional duties may include studying energetics and aging materials using a range of analytical techniques. The selected candidate will engage with a multi-disciplinary team to design and carrying out such experiments. This position is in the Material Science and System Performance team within the Reaction Dynamics Group of the Materials Science Division.

- Conduct fundamental research to explore high-temperature chemistry using a variety of laser-based spectroscopic techniques.
- Participate in development and testing of new experimental methods to elucidate formation of molecular species and particles in condensing plasmas.
- Perform and/or interpret compositional analyses of collected particulates from condensing plasmas using a range of analytical tools.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data and compare with model predictions.
- Function as an independent researcher with a high-level of attention to detail.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and at conferences.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.

- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, engineering or a related field.
- Experience in statistical analysis of data.
- Familiarity with spectroscopic techniques and spectral data interpretation.
- Experience interpreting data output from a range of analytical techniques (e.g., SEM, EDS, XRD).
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to: work in a multidisciplinary team environment, author technical reports and scientific publications, and deliver scientific presentations.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Experience with custom laser applications or optical engineering.
- Experience in analyzing plasmas and studying condensates from high-temperature processes.
- Programming experience in LabVIEW, JAVA, C++, Python, and experience using computational modeling tools or programming languages to interpret complex datasets.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This are two year Postdoctoral appointments with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
