Laser Materials Interactions - Staff Scientist

We have an opening for a Materials Scientist/Chemist/Physicist to conduct a full range of moderate to complex research in the areas of materials science, especially in laser-materials interactions. You will actively participate with and be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research in lasers for DOE, NNSA, and DoD national security missions. This position is in the Laser Materials Interaction Science group in the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct moderately complex to complex research in laser-material interactions using materials characterization including time-resolved photoluminescence imaging.
  • Contribute to the development of a focused research program centered on the understanding of laser matter interactions.
  • Independently develop moderately complex to complex methods for multi-dimensional optical imaging and spectroscopy.
  • Prepare written analyses, verbal briefings, and other products that capture and communicate research results.
  • Present research findings to sponsors and consumers.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the development of materials characterization tools to meet sponsor needs in appropriate national security areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • BS in chemistry, materials science, physics or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad experience in laser-based microscopy and spectroscopy.
  • Broad understanding of basic materials science and advanced optical microscopy.
  • Ability to work independently on defined research projects.
  • Experience conducting directed research with limited direction.
  • Experience operating computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to document research results, and to prepare and present proposals, papers, and reports to internal and external audiences.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • MS in materials science, chemistry, physics and/or related field).
  • Experience in characterization of laser-induced damage.

Security Clearance

LLNL is a Department of Energy (DOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Laboratory.
