Job Description

The Sensors & Electromagnetic Applications Laboratory (SEAL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is seeking senior-level engineers and scientists who have a sustained track record performing in the role of a system engineer or antenna subsystem lead on large phased array radar systems. Candidates would work with the new Army phased array developments to include the Lower Tier Air & Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) and Sentinel radar and the Missile Defense Agency's Long Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR). Candidates would support government agencies providing subject matter expertise and thought leadership throughout the development and sustainment phases of these programs. Candidates would regularly participate in design reviews, technical interchange meetings, developmental testing, and initial operational test. As technical issues arise, candidates are expected to work with the Government and OEM partners to provide well thought out solutions supported by strong technical analysis. Candidates will regularly perform analysis of measured data obtained from various subsystems, conduct performance and error prediction studies, and exercise or create modeling & simulation tools to support system and subsystem assessments.

Job Duties

  • Serve in an independent adversary role to the Government providing subject matter expertise in phased array radar systems.
  • Conduct studies to predict the performance of the overall system and various subsystems.
  • Maintain a catalog of error sources and loss budgets and their values for the various subsystems.
  • Assess error and loss impacts on system performance.
  • Track technology trends in phased arrays to include solid-state devices.
  • Create technical briefings that convey findings and assessments and present them to the Government and OEM.
  • As needed, develop models and simulations in Matlab or exercise existing in-house models to support performance prediction.
  • Participate in developmental and operational testing at OEM facilities, test ranges, and at site.
  • Manage project funding, deliverables, and project technical staff.
  • Interface with customers on a regular basis providing technical and programmatic updates.

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Principal Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and eleven (11) years of relevant full-time experience, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+years of experience in the field of radar
  • Relevant experience over a broad range of radar subsystems (e.g., transmitter, receiver, signal processor, power systems, etc.)to include phased array antennas in order to best serve in a system engineering role
  • Keen written and oral skills in order to document and convey one's research to both internal and external customers on a regular basis

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
