Job Description

This is a position of high trust in regard to both GTRI and the US National Security community. The Signals and System Division (SASD) within the Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) of GTRI develops physics-based models and performs complex math- and physics-based analysis of highly sensitive sensor and electronic warfare capabilities. The division maintains subject matter expertise in areas of sensor processing, electronic warfare techniques, systems engineering, and threat analysis. These technical areas are combined in modeling and simulation or testing environments to evaluate novel kill web techniques. To support this, SASD core competencies include signal processing, waveform development, advanced computing and mathematics to support system evaluation, evaluate modeling and simulation methods and data reduction efforts. This position requires exemplary professional conduct and adherence to stringent standards and security regulations well-beyond that required by the average GTRI employee.

This position is for a junior researcher that emphasizes solid growth into the the Division's core technical capabilities regarding Modeling and Simulation. The Signals and Systems Division provides sponsors and GTRI leadership with expert knowledge of operational systems, threat systems and technical requirements for future threat systems. As such all applicants must be a US citizen and have the ability to attain and hold a US security clearance. Preference will be given to candidates currently holding a security clearance.

Job Duties:

  • Perform detailed analysis regarding performance of sensor, waveform or employment concepts, from simple to complex scenarios as more experience is gained.
  • Assist in the development of custom software to evaluate novel techniques (sensor, electronic warfare and operational employment) for a variety of scenarios and implementations.
  • Perform data reduction tasks (on small or large datasets) to generate metrics that assess concept performance.
  • Maintain configuration management of COTS/GOTS and developed software.
  • Document analysis and research findings in both PowerPoint and technical prose.
  • Limited travel may be involved as project work may occur in Atlanta or at a location other than Atlanta.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Physics, Engineering, Math or Computer Science.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Math or Computer Science and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, Math or Computer Science and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Physics, Engineering, Math or Computer Science.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than  December 2019.
  • Must have 2 years of experience in modeling and simulation or engagement modeling
  • Programming experience using MATLAB or PYTHON
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with multiple programming languages including MATLAB, PYTHON, C++, SQL and PERL
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with operational research Model and Simulation tools such as AFSIM or Benchmark
  • Familiarity with Linux, open source tools, and configuration management tools
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
