Job Description

We are seeking candidates for a Research Engineer position with a background in Microwave Photonics. Chosen candidates will build and expand GTRI’s research portfolio in the areas of radar, electronic warfare, and similar electronic systems, and advance the technology readiness level of high-impact technologies. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills, familiarity with photonic modeling and design tools, and is ready to take on business development responsibilities.

The RF Photonics and Materials (RFPAM) Division currently performs advanced systems research that involves the development of new material technologies, RF photonic and electronic integrated circuits, and RF/millimeter-wave (mmW) devices. These components and sub-systems are used in a variety of systems and applications, primarily for DoD platforms and radar systems.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related degree.

Research Engineer II

  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

0 - 6 years of the following experience:

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor’s degree program relevant to this position will be considered
  • Working knowledge of microwave photonic theory and components
  • Experience using common optical test equipment (spectrum analyzers, power meters, and signal analyzers)
  • Experience with RF photonic component and system simulation software (RSoft, PhoeniX, or similar)
  • Familiarity with PCB layout tools (Altium Designer, Cadence or similar)
  • Design, development, and demonstration of microwave photonic experiments
  • Travel may be involved, as project work may occur in Atlanta or at a location other than Atlanta

Preferred Qualifications

  • Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, and LabView
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with Linux and open source tools
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas to a non-technical audience
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a dynamic team environment

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.
