Job Description

A full-time, permanent position is available starting May 2021 to Head the Intelligent Adaptive Networks Branch (IANB) of the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).  IANB currently has 8 full time researchers and staff operating on about $4M of sponsored research per year and operates within the Communication Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD).  The main focus of IANB is developing adaptive networking and communications technologies including the sensors that are essential for environmental mapping as well as the decision processes, based both on conventional and artificial intelligence schemes.  The nature of the adaptive communications can be spectral adaptation or other types of adaptation.

The ICL lab has programs across a wide range of information science research, including communications, sensing, networks, advanced computing, trusted information exchange, enterprise modernization, software applications, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and health systems.  The goal of CSSD is to grow a forward looking capability in four primary technology areas to provide the essential elements required by tomorrows warfighter:  advanced communications systems, intelligent networks adapting to real-time environmental data, virtualized networks and sophisticated visualization capabilities that bring innovative cross disciplinary methods and techniques to the laboratorys diverse information science portfolio.  Current efforts include projects in 5G testbeds and applications including network slicing, electronic warfare, geospatial visualization, mission planning and dynamic spectrum sensing and adaptation.

The responsibilities of the Branch Head are divided between leadership and independent research. It is expected that the leadership responsibilities of this position will be 25% time, with the other 75% coverage coming from externally funded research programs. The position is based at GTRI facilities in Midtown Atlanta, GA. Researchers at GTRI are research faculty at Georgia Tech.

Job Duties

Management duties include:

  • Development of strategic vision and execution plan for IANB in conjunction with the Laboratory and Directorate Leadership,
  • Oversight of branch program and operational activities,
  • Leading contract development activities and interfacing with sponsors,
  • Personnel management including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.,
  • Management of budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures.

Research duties include:

  • Lead agile team of 8-12 researchers in the intelligent adaptive networking and communications area,
  • Identify new opportunities to expand our intelligent adaptive networking and communications sponsor base,
  • Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
  • Program management of specific research projects,
  • Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision,
  • Development of proposals for new research efforts

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Computational Sciences and Engineering or other related fields and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in developing adaptive networking and communications platforms and solutions including related sensors and adaptive control mechanisms,
  • Demonstrated recent performance in successful development of external customers, proposal development, and sponsor awards,
  • Demonstrated recent experience in leading research projects and managing researchers,
  • Demonstrated technical achievements in the research related to IANB technical areas,
  • Excellent communication skills,

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
