UW Medicines four hospitals Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center -Northwest, UW Medical Center - Montlake and Valley Medical Center admit more than 63,000 patients each year. UW Medicine provides outpatient care for more than 1.3 million patients each year at its 12 UW Neighborhood Clinics and its many other primary and specialty care clinics.

Learning Technologies and Infrastructure (LT&I) within UW Medicine Human Resources has an outstanding full time opportunity for an Instructional Design Consultant.

In order to achieve its mission of improving the health of the public, UW Medicine needs effective regulatory, compliance, clinical, security and operational training. For the purpose of training, the scope of UW Medicines Learning Hub includes:

  • Harborview Medical Center (HMC)

  • UW Medical Center (Montlake and Northwest)

  • UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC)

  • UW Physicians (UWP)

  • Valley Medical Center (VMC)

  • UW School of Medicine (SOM)

  • Airlift Northwest (ALNW)

  • Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA)

    The Instructional Design Consultant will support UW Medicines strategy for eLearning Curriculum Design and Development and provide guidance to UW Medicines hospitals and entities.   The scope and popularity of the Learning Hub (UW Medicines learning management system) emphasizes the need to modernize training and re-skill our educators, so they effectively move away from traditional classroom training and apply modern digital solutions appropriately.   This role will apply adult learning principles to analyze, design, develop, implement, evaluate and maintain UW Medicine system-wide training.

    The Instructional Design Consultant will also provide learning consulting services for Learning Hub customers seeking to develop their own training programs using a standardized instructional design methodology.   In addition to building up the skills of current staff, the program will manage key system-wide training programs, such as the UW Medicine Annual Refresher Program.

    The person in this role collaborates with clinical education leaders to establish workforce-training standards for UW Medicine, including standards for the lifecycle of learning development.  The Instructional Design Consultant creates and shares best practices, templates and processes to help UW Medicine training groups follow these standards.

    The instructional design consultant works with departments across UW Medicine to determine the most appropriate training approach, delivery platform, goals and objectives for each learning program.  This includes coordinating and negotiating with UW Medicine organization resources for the design, development and implementation of training.


    Curriculum Design and eLearning Development, Implementation and Evaluation

    Analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate enterprise-focused learning objectives, course outlines, assessments, storyboards, and eLearning courses.
    Develop web-based training, videos and other eLearning courses for the UW Medicine system.
    Evaluate ongoing training programs, and continuously maintain and improve the content.
    Identify the appropriate platforms for training delivery based on audience and clinical needs.
    Lead and organize entity leaders and subject-matter experts to produce content deliverables.
    Perform quality assurance; review and proof all curriculum to ensure consistency and alignment at the enterprise level.
    Apply principles of adult learning theory, group dynamics, group facilitation, needs analysis, program design evaluation and change management into day-to-day practice and program offerings.
    Coach entity developers in the creation and maintenance of their own learning programs.
    Manage handoffs to Learning Technologies & Infrastructure (LT&I) staff and/or appropriate instructors to deliver training.

    Develop, Maintain and Apply UW Medicine Training Program Standards

    Employ, maintain and refine the processes and standards for training development for UW Medicine.
    Create training process documents, best practices, tools and templates to support the UW Medicine training standards.
    Coach and educate UW Medicine training professionals on the use of standards, best practices, rolls and templates.
    Use UW Medicine standard tools and templates to design and develop training materials.

    Educational Needs Analysis and Consulting

    Elicit business requirements from sponsors, entity leaders and SMEs, and translate those requirements into training requirements and learning objectives, where applicable.
    Gather and document organization education and training objectives, desired outcomes and performance measurements.
    Consult with organization leaders regarding optimal methods of achieving their organization education and training goals.
    Assist organization education leadership in identifying potential opportunities to improve the effectiveness of organization programs through supplemental methods in addition to formal training (job aids, reference materials, process improvements etc.)
    Document existing training materials for UW Medicine.
    Gather, review, and create summaries of the participant training evaluations.  Make recommendations for curricula changes based on findings.
    Lead continuous improvement efforts to address issues or concerns.

    Manage Instructional Design & Development Projects

    Drive projects end-to-end, from the original business case to the project closure and post-mortem.
    Prepare project sponsors and entity leaders for project kickoffs and ongoing change control.
    Lead ongoing project meetings and provide updates for project stakeholders through the life of the projects.
    Identify and escalate challenges, obstacles and organizational resistance that may interfere with project goals, as necessary.
    Lead and Manage Projects and support UW Medicine System-wide Governance Groups


    Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Learning Technologies, Education, Educational Technology, or similar field. A Bachelors degree in another discipline coupled with appropriate experience in instructional design will also be considered.

    5+ years of instructional design experience, which must include:
  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing curricula using standardized instructional design methodology and adult learning theory.
  • 5+ years of experience creating multi-media and eLearning programs using authoring tools such as Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, or Lectora Inspire.
  • Demonstrated experience with building training programs from the ground up.
  • Demonstrated history of synthesizing operational data, regulations, applicable literature and verbal input into appropriate policy and procedure.
  • Experience writing, proofing and editing courseware content for grammar, accuracy and clarity.
  • Experience with web development and interface development, including developing, bug-testing and troubleshooting web-based content.
  • Fast-paced, self-motivated working style and ability to manage evolving and sometimes competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated track record of excellent interpersonal skills and a strong customer service orientation.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
  • Working knowledge of project planning and control techniques, such as work breakdown structures, critical path analysis and conflict resolution.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.


  • Masters Degree in Instructional Design, Education, Educational Technology or equivalent.
  • Experience developing training in a regulation-driven industry, such as healthcare.
  • Experiencing with video production software (e.g. Camtasia Studio, Adobe Premiere, etc.)
  • CPLP or PMP certification.
  • Change management experience.
  • Experience building instrumentation into a software application.
  • Specific experience with Articulate Storyline.
  • Experienced in project risk management/mitigation.
  • A portfolio of professional work demonstrating the required elements of the position.


  • Information Technology deadline-driven environment.
  • Must be able to work with a great deal of autonomy and independent judgment.
  • Must translate business objectives from senior leaders into learning objectives and audience rules that can be coded into the LMS application.
  • Must lead project and functional teams as assigned without direct supervisory authority (matrix organization).
  • Program operates within the confines of standard IT methodology: Design Review, IT Project Management, Change Control, Risk Assessment, and Code Management.
  • Must work within the constraints of multiple technical environments.
  • UW Medicine LMS services all UW Medicine organizations School of Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, UW Physicians, UW Neighborhood Clinics, Airlift Northwest and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.
  • Must learn many organizational structures and cultures and foster collaboration.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations within the Seattle area, based on customer needs.
