We have an opening for an inorganic geochemist to provide analytical chemistry support to LLNL projects involving low-level uranium and plutonium isotopic analysis of environmental samples as well as actinide decay-series radiochronometry of nuclear materials. You will perform bulk sample digestions and dissolutions, purify actinides from the bulk sample using ion exchange methods, and complete isotopic analyses by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. This position is in the Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.Essential Duties- Independently prepare samples for isotopic analysis by digesting, quantitatively splitting and spiking, and purifying from sample matrix by ion exchange methods.- Perform isotopic analysis of actinides by MC-ICP-MS.- Perform data reduction and calculations, and prepare data reports.- Maintain laboratory records for quality control and quality assurance purposes.- Maintain chemistry laboratory equipment and interact with vendors or technicians for equipment purchase or repairs.- Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity.- Interact with and support team members and the principal investigators on multiple projects.- Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications- B.S. in chemistry, geochemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience in the analysis of environmental samples for the determination of trace metal isotopic composition by magnetic sector multi-collector mass spectrometry.- Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience performing elemental concentration analysis by mass spectrometry.- Experience preparing samples in a clean room setting.- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.- Experience performing quality control evaluation of analytical data.- Proficient communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment.Desired Qualifications- M. S. in chemistry, geochemistry or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Ability to coordinate complex tasks by interacting independently with professionals in the execution of responsibilities.- Experience in writing reports and publications.- Experience in verbal presentation and communication of technical information.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
