Job Description

GTRI-CIPHER is seeking a lead for the internal Information Technology group in the San Diego Field Office (SDFO), responsible for managing a team of three full-time professionals and nine students. The CIPHER IT team supports over 250 researchers, engineers, and support staff tackling complex and novel IT challenges for commercial and government customers. The CIPHER IT team is distributed across multiple campus buildings in Atlanta, GA, along with Field Offices in San Diego, CA and Panama City, FL. CIPHER IT also supports a sizable base of remote users across the United States. The candidate will work closely with CIPHER IT Leadership to facilitate and improve day-to-day IT operations for CIPHER's SDFO, and all other CIPHER field offices and remote users. Outside of internal operations, the SDFO Lead is expected to actively participate in sponsored research programs across the laboratory above and beyond providing technology support. Many of GTRI-CIPHERs programs require sophisticated information technology platforms and, as such, the SDFO Lead will be required to hold a Department of Defense Top Secret clearance.

Job Duties

Lead the Information Technology team of GTRI/CIPHER IT Infrastructure and information systems in the San Diego Field Office. Responsible for the day-to-day operational activities of the CIPHER IT Operations and Infrastructure in SDFO, including managing the SDFO IT Team, managing the IT Help Desk for the SDFO, maintaining and supporting the IT Infrastructure for the office. The candidate will also work closely with IT leadership, stakeholders, and CIPHER Project/Process Management to effectively translate business strategy and objectives into technological capability. This role is specific to the CIPHER IT Group. This position will interact on a regular basis with: Staff, third party vendors, and service providers This position typically will advise and counsel: Staff, third party vendors, and service providers This position will supervise: Assigned staff.

Key Responsibilities include the following:

Provide outstanding Information Technology support to all GTRI-CIPHER employees.

Manage the GTRI-CIPHER IT SDFO Team (Currently three full time employees and nine students).


The SDFO IT Team will be responsible for completing all Tier I and Tier II Information Technology Support requests within scope.

Manage KPIs and ensure metrics are met.

Coordinate with CIPHER IT SDFO Help Desk personnel and resources to ensure the labs requirements are being met.

Partner with the GTRI-CIPHER Architecture & Infrastructure and Sponsored Support teams to support and maintain the heterogeneous (multiplatform) infrastructure:

OS Support (Mac OS X, Linux, Windows)

Configuration Management across all devices/OSes.

Perform maintenance, upgrades, and/or deployment.

Backups and Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity.

Deploy patches and updates to keep vulnerabilities under control

Manage and execute projects or strategic initiatives to improve infrastructure.

Support classified systems infrastructure:

Perform maintenance, upgrades, and/or deployment.

Coordinate IA involvement in support of IT infrastructure for sponsored research programs.

Collaboratively create and update system documentation.

Collaboratively create and implement SOPs for IT tasks, activities, maintenance, etc.

Actively support and contribute to GTRI-CIPHER sponsored research projects.

A/V and Conference Room Support and Maintenance

Actively promote the creative use of technology to improve productivity and customer service.

Develop and manage key relationships within GTRI and across the Georgia Tech Campus.

Respond in an effective and timely manner to information system requests for support as escalated by divisions within CIPHER and/or end-users.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline.

  •  Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business, or related discipline


Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
