The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) is a trade association and Standards developing organization representing manufacturers of safe, reliable and efficient electrical and medical imaging technologies in tune with the digital and connected times. NEMA supports its Members by developing industry Standards, advocating for government policies, and providing decision-grade business intelligence.

The Industry Director, Building Systems leads the NEMA Building Systems Division, including ten product Sections representing various technologies installed in commercial and residential buildings. Key technologies include building controls, submeters, building management systems, power electronics, fire and life safety technologies, healthcare communication systems, low-voltage electricity distribution equipment, and emerging digital and wireless technologies. The Industry Director also leads the NEMA High-Performance Buildings Council. The Council promotes energy code development and adoption, as well as government policies to increase building energy efficiency, safety, occupant health and productivity, and other aspects of building performance.

The position manages a multi-million-dollar annual budget and oversees the task work of technical, government relations, communications, and business information professionals assigned to the Building Systems Division efforts. The Industry Directory must understand the current state of building systems and products, evaluate potential future developments, create strategic plans for each of the product areas, and achieve the goals of those plans. Prior management experience preferred.

The Industry Director coordinates work on domestic and international Standards development (e.g., American National Standards Institute, International Electrotechnical Commission), building code development (e.g., National Electrical Code®, International Energy Conservation Code). Familiarity with existing and emerging building technologies, codes, and Standards is highly desirable.

The position reports to the Vice President of Operations and Strategy and in Arlington (Rosslyn), Virginia. The position likely includes up to 25 percent travel, both domestic and international. Part-time telework is available per NEMA policy. The incumbent will from time to time take on additional tasks as needed.


  • Undergraduate degree required; advanced/technical degree a plus
  • Seven or more years full-time experience in related field(s)
  • Deep knowledge of existing and emerging building technologies desired
  • Experience of technical Standards development process highly desired; AStd or CStd Standards professional certification a differentiator
  • Program management, time management, and budgeting skills required
  • Ability to clearly and persuasively write and speak with executive presence
  • Ability to quickly, fairly, and diplomatically resolve conflicts
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience using online collaboration and communication software (e.g., SharePoint, Teams) a plus
