We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop novel in vitro and in vivo assays to assess vaccine efficacy in support of an NIH-funded Immunology Core. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop, optimize, characterize, and validate assays that help to inform vaccine efficacy. This position is in the Microbiology and Immunology group and the Human Health Sciences groups in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.
Essential Duties
- Design and implement in vitro and in vivo assays to assess vaccine efficacy and or identify immune correlates of protection.
- Design, implement, and analyze multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments.
- Design and perform assays to assess immune function in animal models in response to vaccination.
- Design and perform in vitro cell-based assays to characterize humoral and cell mediated immune responses elicited by vaccine formulations.
- Evaluate large data sets to troubleshoot and refine assays.
- Design and apply biochemical and PCR assays to monitor biological pathways in cells and animals.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment andother national laboratories and industry to accomplish research goals.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in immunology or infectious diseases or related field.
- Experience with multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting.
- Experience characterizing immune responses in animal models.
- Knowledge of molecular biology laboratory instruments.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with DNA and RNA extraction using Qiagen kits including minipreps, maxipreps, gel extraction and PCR purification.
- Working knowledge of nanoparticle platforms for vaccine applications, protein purification and characterization techniques.
- Experience using single cell RNAseq to probe immune function.

Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
