Job Description

The Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Systems Engineering Research Division (SERD) is currently seeking a Human Systems Engineer for a full time research faculty position in the Human Systems Engineering Branch (HSEB). HSEB is predominantly focused on the research, development and application of human systems engineering tools and methods for the design, development, and evaluation of complex systems.


  • Conduct task analyses (cognitive and functional)
  • Design information architectures and graphical user interfaces for complex military systems
  • Perform analyses and document results to support human systems engineering activities
  • Execute usability tests and evaluations of human systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Human Systems Engineering (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, etc.).

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist/Associate II

  • A Master’s degree in Human Systems Engineering (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, etc.) and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Human Systems Engineering (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, etc.) and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Human Systems Engineering (e.g., Industrial Engineering, Psychology, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, etc.).

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • NOTE: Consideration will be given to candidates with a Bachelor's degree and 4+ years of experience performing in roles that align with the responsibilities and requirements defined for this position or candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's degree with a graduation date of December 2019 and skills relevant to this position will be considered.
  • Familiarity with various types of cognitive task analyses, functional analyses, and job task analyses
  • Familiarity with user centered design (research, design, and test)
  • Familiarity with anthropometric analyses

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting cognitive task analyses, job task analyses, and knowledge,skills and abilities analyses
  • Experience with conceptual design and detailed design of user interfaces
  • Experience with measurement and assessment of workload, situational awareness, usability, human performance, and user acceptance
  • Experience developing surveys and interview instruments
  • Familiarity with experimental design and statistics (basic descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, structural equation modeling)
  • Experience with mobile design
  • Experience conducting anthropometric analyses

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
