Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have anopening for multiple postdoctoral positions in the areas of fundamental and applied research in high-pressure, high-temperature materials science. You will work with a team of experienced physicists and engineers to design, execute, and analyze experiments using gas guns, diamond anvil cells, lasers, x-ray facilities, and computational/numerical simulations. This position is part of the High Pressure Physics Group (high-pressure.llnl.gov) in the Physics Division.
Essential Duties
- Contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of studies of materials properties under extreme pressure or temperature conditions. Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, the following topics: equations of state; heterogeneous materials; force propagation under high strain; phase transitions, reactions, and kinetics; strength and failure studies; and the synthesis, processing, and development of novel materials.
- Participate inexperiments conducted at off-site facilities.
- Develop and extend analytical and instrumental tools, including computer algorithms and experimental diagnostics.
- Document and publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals.
- Present results at conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, geophysics, condensed matter, or a related field.
- Experience with comprehensive data analysis, for example: curve fitting, non-linear fitting, numerical simulation, machine learning, spectroscopic or x-ray analysis; or writing code/scripts for data analysis and simulations; ordeveloping new models to understand material properties.
- Experience and innovation in a broad range of experimental design, methods, and analysis.
- Ability to perform independent research and use a scientific approach to solve problems.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills (writing reports, peer-reviewed publications, and proposals).
- Initiative and interpersonal skills to work ina collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience using diamond anvil cells, presses, Hopkinson bars, drop towers, gas guns, or lasers to study materials under pressure; or experience working at beamlines/large facilities.
- Experience with in-situ measurements, computer interfacing (e.g., LabView); familiarity with electronic instrumentation/circuits, such as oscilloscopes and triggering systems; experience with image processing/analysis or x-ray based diagnostics; or experience with time-resolved or spectrally-resolved measurements.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a twoyear Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of threeyears. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
