Job Description

A full-time, permanent position is available for a proven HPC Engineer with experience in high performance computing system architecture and parallel programming in the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). ICL is one of the eight research units of GTRI with programs across a wide range of Information Science research, including communications, sensing, networks, advanced computing, trusted information exchange, enterprise modernization, software applications, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and health systems. Research programs support a wide range of sponsors across national security, health, public safety, State, and industry. ICL currently has over 200 researchers and staff performing over $60M in research per year.

ICL is searching for a versatile, talented engineer that is interested in designing and writing parallel applications, doing performance modeling and tuning, and transitioning codes into production applications. Experience with parallel programming models is a must: MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, CUDA, etc. Knowledge of and experience with other HPC technologies such as networking (Ethernet, Infiniband, OPA), parallel filesystems (Lustre, GPFS, Gluster), and cluster management and scheduling (Slurm) is preferred. The ideal candidate understands how HPC systems are designed from the ground up and can use that knowledge to help others achieve the greatest performance that the machine can offer.

The successful candidate will have a Bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and 2+ years of experience in the technical areas described above. Graduate degrees are encouraged to apply

Job Duties

  • Design, build, and operate high performance computing systems
  • Conduct performance modeling and analysis of application codes to suggest optimization strategies
  • Develop scalable application codes for modern high performance computing systems
  • Work with sponsors to assess computational requirements, select appropriate computational resources, and integrate expansion capabilities into an operational datacenter
  • Evaluate and select state-of-the-art hardware and software for high performance computing system management and operation
  • Work with users to improve utilization of parallel programming tools and frameworks

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline and 2+ years of experience

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
