We have an opening for a Health and Safety Technologist or Sr. Health and Safety Technologist in the Environment, Safety & Health Directorate. You will provide general technical support and solve moderately complex technical problems for personal protective equipment in the Respirator Services laboratory.

This position will be filled at either the 571.2 or 571.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

- Act as a liaison between the ES&H disciplines, field technicians and clients to ensure they receive the proper respirator protection in a timely manner.

- Provide the necessary respirator training and quantitative fit testing, and evaluate, maintain and report respirator training and fit test data using the Respirator Services database.

- Follow written policy and procedures to clean, service, inspect, test and issue respiratory protection equipment and provide feedback to recommend improvements.

- Operate a TSI Portacount to measure how well a respirator fits the users and evaluate the knowledge of respirator users by leading them through practical training exercises.

- Maintain knowledge of specific respirator configurations within Respirator Services.

- Order respiratory supplies and equipment and maintain inventory control by the use of the Respiratory Services database.

- Perform periodic functional tests on self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units and collect periodic breathing air quality samples from supplied air systems.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the 571.3 Level

- Set daily priorities for Respirator Services and provide daily updates to the Respiratory Protection Program Administrator (RPPA) on the status of shop activities, issues, and priorities.

- Maintain calibration of fit-testing and gas monitoring equipment.

- Identify respirators for new applications, by contacting and working with vendors.


- Associate degree in occupational safety or other related ES&H field or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

- Experience operating compressed air equipment at pressures up to 2,500 psig.

- Intermediate technical knowledge in the use, operation, and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment.

- Knowledge of ES&H regulations and QA/QC guidelines to provide technical guidance to clients.

- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

- Effective interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with a variety of LLNL personnel, including professional and technical staff members.

- Ability to make routine commitments as authorized by immediate supervisor.

- Ability to perform frequent bending and stooping, apply forceful gripping/pressing with hands and arms, and carry up to 30 lbs.

In Addition, at the 571.3 Level

- Advanced knowledge in the use, operation, and maintenance of respiratory protection equipment.

- Independent analytical, decision making, and problem-solving skills.

Desired Qualifications

- Knowledge of WSHFA policy and procedures.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
