Health Physics Graduate Summer Student Intern

We have multiple openings for graduate students and for students who have received a bachelor's or master's degree to support the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. You will work under the direction of the Radiation Protection Functional Area Manager to complete a project, or series of projects, that combine hands-on experience with technical knowledge. You may interact with all levels of personnel at the Laboratory including managers, experimenters, technicians, and other personnel that may be outside the ES&H Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Work with technical staff members to provide support in the area of Health Physics (HP).
  • Under close supervision, will participate in HP compliance in assigned area.
  • Under limited direction and supervision will provide support to the HP SME.
  • Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to the HP SME.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree or has completed their bachelor's or master's degree in nuclear engineering or a closely related technical field
  • Ability to apply scientific methods to solve a defined problem or study question.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Advanced analytical skills.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to apply basic and fundamental health physics concepts in a work environment.
  • Experience in research and/or laboratory-type work settings as well as experience or working knowledge in mathematics and science.
  • Demonstrated academic achievement in subject matter associated with radiation safety.
