Job Description

The Center for Health Analytics and Informatics (CHAI) at the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) seeks Student Research Assistants to work as FHIR Security Engineers within our center at the Georgia Tech-Atlanta campus for the fall 2021 semester. This position would be responsible for working on projects related to health data interoperability and security. In this role, we expect you to work with a team of FHIR developers, data scientists, and software engineers to craft innovative security solutions for problems within public health, or to support clinical health systems and related research.

As a health data informatics intern, work opportunities consist of building, deploying, and testing FHIR solutions that solve real health data and interoperability problems. Experience with capture the flag events, firmware/software reverse engineering, or software-defined networks is desired. Researching and implementing applications of hardware-assisted technologies for a variety of cybersecurity-related efforts is a core element of this role. Work under this internship role may also include writing, translating, and coding software programs, applications, tools, and prototypes according to research goals.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant

Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Cybersecurity, Mathematics, or related field
3.0 or higher GPA
Experience or interest in working in health, public health, security, or a related field
Experience with at least one programming language

Preferred Qualifications

Strong Java or Python programming skills
Experience working with remote teams and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines
Experience using code repositories, e.g. git
Strong analytical skills and ability to learn complex data structure concepts
Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
Experience with capture the flag events, firmware/software reverse engineering, or software-defined networks is desired.
Interest or coursework in developing rapid prototypes and pilots using HL7 FHIR, SMART on FHIR, and other industry standards.
