We have an opening for a Health and Safety Associate to provide highly advanced technical support for the radiological instrumentation used in the ES&H Radiological Measurements Lab (RML) and the ES&H Radiation Calibration Lab (RCL). You will serve as the subject matter expert in all matters relating to continuous air monitors (CAMs), liquid scintillation counters (LSCs), and alpha/beta counters. In addition to serving as the RML QC Coordinator, you will also provide technical guidance and specialized services to ES&H critical functions using advanced technical knowledge in radiation detection instrumentation. This position is in the Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 371.1 or 371.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

  • Provide specialized and advanced technical support for instrumentation that acquires data from radiological swipes and air samples, including analyzing and interpreting complex data, identifying problems, and implementing solutions.
  • Provide QA/QC technical support, including the review and analysis of complex instrumentation data, reporting results, and maintaining clear records as well as ensuring all technical training is completed by staff.
  • Maintain equipment operability and assure optimum operations, including installation of replacement instruments or electronic equipment, and assure proper associations with other system electronics and computer registries. Perform calibrations and serve as the POC for keeping maintenance contracts current for radiation detection instrumentation.
  • Provide solutions to highly complex technical problems including instrument-related problems that arise with field LSCs, alpha/beta counters, and CAMs, including troubleshooting and facilitation of repairs.
  • Develop, evaluate, interpret, and revise operational procedures, QA/QC manuals, and technical basis documents for the ES&H RML and RCL to improve quality, efficiency, and productivity in collaboration and work with Health Physicists, ES&H Team Health and Safety technologists, RML/RCL customers, and outside vendors.
  • Analyze and interpret complex ES&H related data. Report results, identify problems, and plan projects to solve problems in ES&H activities.
  • Develop and conduct field training, mentoring and training evaluations in support of Health and Safety Technician qualifications. Provide general direction in support of ES&H, programmatic, institutional and emergency support operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the 371.2 Level

  • Develop, evaluate, interpret, and revise operational procedures, QA/QC manuals, and technical basis documents for the ES&H RML and RCL to improve quality, efficiency, and productivity.
  • Develop/maintain computer-based programs associated with instrumentation in collaboration with ES&H IT support.


  • Bachelors degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, Radiation Protection, or other scientific field or the equivalent combination of education and extensive related experience.
  • Advanced skills, knowledge, and abilities in radiation detection instrumentation (to include operation, calibration, and troubleshooting); experience in calibrating and maintaining radiation detection equipment and systems, such as LSC, gas proportional counters and CAM.
  • Significant experience analyzing highly complex data as well as implementing the QA/QC programs associated with such equipment and systems; thorough understanding of counting statistics, instrument software, and data handling.
  • Significant experience assessing radiation measurement needs with technical experts, acquiring instrumentation/systems and performing the technical training and oversight for these systems.
  • Effective organizational skills with detail orientation necessary to handle multiple highly complex tasks in a demanding environment with conflicting priorities, tight and changing deadlines, unscheduled events, and frequent interruptions while providing high-level operational support and follow through.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to handle highly complex, sensitive, and confidential issues with tact, discretion, and mature judgement.
  • Advanced written, verbal, feedback and communication skills in multiple technical areas to effectively present highly complex technical information to all levels of personnel internal and external to LLNL.
  • Advanced decision making and problem-solving skills to evaluate, negotiate, develop, and implement actions and solutions for highly complex problems and the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.

In Addition at the 371.2 Level

  • - Highly advanced and specialized technical skills in radiation detection instrumentation.
  • - Extensive experience analyzing highly complex data as well as implementing the QA/QC programs associated with such equipment and systems.
  • - Extensive experience assessing radiation measurement needs with technical experts.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience programming software-controlled analytical equipment and processing data, as well as developing database systems and developing and validating algorithms for determining detection limits; experience with developing algorithms for determining detection limits and demonstrating algorithm validity.
  • Experience interfacing with institutional vendors and assessing radiation detection instrumentation and systems, and making recommendations regarding their acquisition.
  • Advanced technical and administrative leadership skills, including experience providing technical guidance and developing associated technical laboratory manuals.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
