Job Description

A full-time, permanent position is available starting April 2021 to Head the Health Analytics and Phenotyping Branch (HAP-B) of the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) in the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).  HAP-B currently has 3 full time researchers and staff operating on about $3M of sponsored research per year and operates within the Health Emerging and Advanced Technologies Division (HEAT-D).  The main focus of HAP-B is generating knowledge to inform and support health stakeholder decision-making based on varied, complex, and often high-volumes of data.

The ICL lab has programs across a wide range of information science research, including communications, sensing, networks, advanced computing, trusted information exchange, enterprise modernization, software applications, data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and health systems.  The goal of HEAT-D is to grow a forward-looking capability in health technologies that brings innovative cross-disciplinary methods and techniques to the laboratorys diverse information science portfolio.  Current efforts include projects in public health, clinical phenotyping, natural language processing, data visualization, synthetic data generation, and interoperability between electronic health record systems.

The responsibilities of the Branch Head are divided between leadership and independent research. It is expected that the leadership responsibilities of this position will be 25% time, with the other 75% coverage coming from externally funded research programs. The position is based at GTRI facilities in Midtown Atlanta, GA. Researchers at GTRI are research faculty at Georgia Tech.

Job Duties

Management duties include:

  • Development of strategic vision and execution plan for HAP-B in conjunction with the Laboratory and Directorate Leadership,
  • Oversight of branch program and operational activities,
  • Leading contract development activities and interfacing with sponsors,
  • Personnel management including hiring, performance evaluations, staffing, career development, etc.,
  • Management of budgets, resources, and compliance with policies and procedures.

Research duties include:

  • Lead an agile team of researchers and students in the designing, conducting, and disseminating analyses using health data.
  • Identify new opportunities to expand our Health Analytics and Phenotyping sponsor base,
  • Research activities supporting sponsored projects,
  • Program management of specific research projects,
  • Development and execution of internal research and development programs supporting the division strategic vision,
  • Development of proposals for new research efforts

Job Duties

  • MS Degree and 7+ years of professional experience in health data, analytic methods, and machine learning.
  • Demonstrated recent performance in successful development of external customers, proposal development, and sponsor awards,
  • Demonstrated recent experience in leading research projects and managing researchers with projects and sponsors related to HEAT-D key areas (public health, health informatics),
  • Demonstrated technical achievements in the research related to HAP-B technical areas (public health informatics, clinical phenotyping, natural language processing, machine learning, data visualization, synthetic data generation),
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Education & Length of Experience

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Masters degree in health data, analytic methods, and machine learning and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in health data, analytic methods, and machine learning and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in health data, analytic methods, and machine learning and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree with a graduation date of May,2021 and skills relevant to this position will be considered

Required Minimum Qualifications

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
