Algorithm & Simulation Directorate

The Algorithm & Simulation Directorate is part of the Cross Product Team within Raytheon Missiles & Defense (RMD) Engineering. The Directorate consists of Guidance, Navigation and Control; Signal Processing; and Modeling and Simulation for Sensors and Effectors. The Algorithm and Simulation team is responsible for developing, implementing and executing the performance disciplines of modeling & simulation, guidance, navigation & controls, and sensor, signal, data and information processing.

The Algorithm and Simulation Directorate (AS) is currently searching for a Senior Manager, Systems Engineering to lead its Effectors GNC: Air Power, Advanced Technology and Land Warfare & Air Defense Department.

This Department Leader will lead a Department of approximately 150 engineers supporting programs within multiple Mission Areas.

Major Leadership and Management Responsibilities
  • Oversee program execution for design and performance assessment of guidance system requirements, trade studies, guidance laws, trajectory optimization, navigation algorithms, target state estimation, track files, target selectivity, and electronic protection.
  • Identify and support development of GNC capabilities for new business applications and technologies that are key to RMD growth, including core business areas and adjacent markets.
  • Participate in development of strategic plans for GNC technology, tools and processes.
  • Serve as GNC point of contact for Mission Areas, Program Chief Engineers, Lead Systems Engineers, Chief Technologists, and Program Managers.
  • Review and approve EACs on department supported programs.
  • Provide effective guidance, coaching and leadership to Section Leaders and IPT / CPT Leads to ensure effective communications and for effective execution of the bid/proposal process and utilization of EVMS, IMS and IMP tools in program execution support.
  • Participate in various reviews including EAC reviews, peer reviews, design reviews, gate reviews, BOE reviews, and test reviews.
  • Drive employee performance management including goal setting, career guidance, performance feedback, compensation, training and development.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to support business needs through appropriate hiring and staffing.
  • Develop partnerships across Raytheon, industry, and academia to facilitate strategic capability development.
  • Prepare for and conduct overhead budget and department operating reviews using RMD engineering tools with the AS Director and the AS Business Manager.
  • Lead the Department in the achievement of AS Directorate, RMD Engineering, and RMD Business Unit goals.
  • Collaborate with the GNC Leadership Team to support business activities within and important to GNC and the AS Directorate.
  • Collaborate with the AS Directorate and RMS Engineering extended leadership teams.
  • Champion leadership, respect, ethics, and diversity initiatives within the Department.


This position requires a current Secret U.S. Security Clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other related STEM discipline.
  • 12+ years professional work experience with expertise in Guidance, Navigation or Control systems.
  • Prior experience in leadership roles with strong technical and management background.
  • Experience managing and supervising large teams of engineers
  • Ability to provide guidance, coaching, and direction to Section Leaders, IPT Leads, and CPT leads.
  • Ability to balance the diverse needs of an engineering organization within a large corporation with the personal needs of employees and technology development needs.
  • Ability to work effectively on multiple tasks and priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • United States Citizenship
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance
  • Must be able to obtain clearances to access proprietary programs.


Desired Qualifications:
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other related STEM discipline.
  • Experience with proposal development and knowledge of the bidding process.
  • Experience in Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
  • Experience with staffing and workforce planning.
  • Strong Matlab/Simulink background and knowledge of existing design and analysis tools.
  • Experience in concept-development studies and systems architecture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective leadership presence during group and individual interactions.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent follow-through and persistence.
  • Ability to state and execute a clear and achievable vision for Department.
  • Experience and expertise on missile programs, including program-specific security clearances.
  • Highly knowledgeable in several of the GNC areas listed above as well as some of the following: subsystem requirements definition and verification, algorithm design and implementation, guidance hardware/software development and verification, hardware testing, model development/verification/validation, and subsystem and free-flight performance evaluation.
  • Multi-discipline engineering background providing knowledge of related technologies and products both specific to GNC and to the broader engineering organization (Aerodynamics, Autopilot, Navigation, embedded software, RF and EO-IR seekers, Systems Engineering, and requirements flow down).
