Background:
Since its inception in 2019, the National Artificial Intelligence Institute (NAII) at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, has advanced artificial intelligence (AI) research and development (R&D) for real-world benefit to Veterans’ health and well-being. The coming years will offer exciting new opportunities to develop artificial intelligence technologies to address challenges across government, improve patient care, and increase efficiencies.
As the largest integrated health care system in the country, with several big data repositories, VA is uniquely positioned to advance AI R&D and implementation at the frontiers of science toward its mission. Duties:
Our data scientists will be responsible for providing support and technical expertise on the aggregation, collation, and the analyzation of data from databases, the development of methodological approaches, study design, and advanced communications of study/analysis output. They will also lead or consult with cross-functional teams made up of skilled federal employees, members of academia, and contractors from the private sector to develop data-driven solutions that will have an impact on decisions related to the design, implementation, and evaluation of administrative orders in the healthcare setting including, but not limited to analyzing electronic health record data to develop predictive analytics and medical image processing. The incumbents will contribute to the development of the design for advanced data systems, software, and complex programming specifications as well as high-impact AI technologies such as deep learning, trustworthy AI, privacy preserving AI, explainable AI, and multi-scale AI Analysis. They will work with large longitudinal medical databases, statistical/analysis software platforms, perform statistical and quantitative analysis utilizing specially developed software models or procedures.
Evaluation:
All applicants will go through multiple scoring rounds, including technical, non-technical aspects. Our ideal candidate is someone who demonstrates excellent technical skills, soft skills (curiosity, communication, adaptability, flexibility, and interpersonal effectiveness), is comfortable working in Python, SQL, and with large volumes of data. We may make exceptions for candidates who are not comfortable working in Python and/or SQL if they can demonstrate exceptional competency in other areas.
We are looking to build a well-rounded multi-disciplinary data science team. Candidates do not necessarily need to be subject matter experts in all areas of data science (generalists), but must demonstrate foundational skills and knowledge in math, stats, and programming. We welcome candidates that specialize in specific areas. Some examples of specializations that we are interested in are deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, reinforcement learning, and network graphs.
Candidates with experience working in clinical and/or bioinformatics are highly encouraged to apply for this position.
