General Engineer (Research)


Are you an Engineer looking to apply your digital and game design expertise to exploring the interaction of human cognition, emotion, and decision-making in a variety complex AR/VR research projects designed to enhance home health care for individuals with chronic medical conditions? If so, we are looking for a General Engineer with skills in developing digital experiences including programming, peripheral use, hardware/software acquisition and management, and data management, to work in a team of graphic designers and researchers.


The NIH National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) seeking an experienced, VR developer to work in an interdisciplinary team to create a variety of immersive experiences related to home healthcare and instrumental activities of daily living. General Engineer (Research) GS-0801-13 for the Advanced Visualization Branch (AVB).


The NINR fosters, conducts, supports, and administers research and research training programs directed at promoting the growth and quality research training programs directed at promotion the growth and quality of research related to nursing, health care, and related biomedical and behavioral sciences, and expanding the pool of scientists to conduct research related to the mission of NINR. The NINR is a major component of the intramural program at the NIH and conducts basic and clinical research on the interactions among molecular mechanisms underlying a single symptom or clusters of symptoms and environmental influences on individual health outcomes. The program and management responsibilities of these activities are complex and critical to NINR’s success in meeting its goals and objectives.


Within the DIR, the AVB has responsibility for research efforts relating to the planning and development of 3D stimulations, virtual environments, and virtual and augmented reality applications designed to improve patient experience and self-care management activities.


The incumbent serves as a senior research engineer, with responsibility for performing, leading, and advising on research activities involving advanced visualization technologies. The work involves access to advanced technology involving digital engineering, as well as aspects of a highly productive clinical research program. The ideal candidate will have excellent programming skills for 3D environments, a mind for game-theory, experience with data structures, great communication skills and a creative problem-solving approach to technical and GUI issues.
