effective as soon as possible.

We are looking for an outstanding scientist who will represent the topic area of networked systems, i.e., computer networks and distributed systems, in research and teaching. Candidates are expected to represent these topics in our undergraduate as well as graduate-level computer science programs. The professorship shall address selected grand challenges in future networked systems such as:

  • software-defined networked systems and network virtualization/network function virtualization
  • low-latency and real-time systems
  • novel paradigms for networked systems (e.g. information-centric/content-centric networks, edge/fog computing) or very large networked systems (e.g. decentralized social networks, internet of things, microservices, functions as a service), distributed operating systems for the cloud
  • systems support and abstractions for high speed I/O and networking, disaggregated hardware, accelerator support for networked systems, systems support for/by AI
  • ubiquitous computing, i.e., intelligent/smart environments as well as their application in, e.g., production, healthcare, critical infrastructures, or digital cities

We expect an outstanding scientific profile documented by research impact. This includes novel approaches (algorithms, protocols, etc.) in the core areas of future networked systems, possibly complemented by documented research excellence in either networked system tool and development support, research in non-functional aspects (predictability, performability, dependability and resiliency, security, anonymity, and privacy), or research in modelling and performance evaluation. Further, a proven track record of successful collaboration in international research teams and with industry is expected.

The professorship shall strengthen the research focus on Networks and distributed systems at the Department of Computer Science as well as the profile area Internet and digitisation at the university level. Collaboration with other core research areas such as cybersecurity, AI & machine learning, data science, or digitisation in engineering is possible and welcome. Participation in the collaborative research centre 1053 Multi-mechanisms adaptation for the future internet (MAKI) is desired.

An excellent doctorate degree, pedagogical and didactic skills as well as appropriate professional experiences (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements) are required. In addition to excellent scientific credentials, a commitment to teaching is important. It is expected that the candidate will contribute to teaching in the bachelor and master’s degree programs of the Department of Computer Science. Participation in academic governance is expected.

TU Darmstadt is an autonomous university with broad excellence in research, an interdisciplinary profile, and clear focus areas in engineering science and information and communication technology. The Department of Computer Science is one of the leaders in research and teaching and regularly ranked within the top German departments.
