We are looking for a skilled FPGA Firmware Engineer to join our team of bright, talented software and firmware engineers. In this role, you’ll develop FPGA firmware for mixed signal scientific instrumentation, while assisting with DSP and microprocessor software programming to extend and enhance our innovative scientific product portfolio.  This is a great opportunity for an experienced firmware engineer to make major technical contributions to an interesting and complex high-tech product, while feeling right at home in our collaborative and supportive family environment.

• Architect, design, implement and test FPGA, DSP and Microprocessor firmware and software for real-time and asynchronous control of Atomic Force Microscopes (AFMs) and related hardware.  Collaborate closely with the R&D group to design, implement and test custom filters, feedback loops and other processing algorithms.
• Contribute as part of a cross-functional team to the system-level design of instrumentation hardware; understand, define, implement, and document system requirements to meet both technical and customer-facing specs.
• Research, prepare, and present technical product development proposals for new and sustaining designs.  Stay up to date on external developments as part of your role in a customer-focused, technology-leading organization. 
• Provide sustaining engineering support including documentation, manual creation and internal/external technical support to ensure a smooth transition of all new product developments from engineering into production, and ensure designs are sustainable and compatible with long-term manufacturability and customer service.

Successful candidates will have:

• A bachelor’s or higher level degree in Electronics Engineering/Software/Physics or equivalent field.
• At least 5 years of experience in VHDL or Verilog for FPGA development, along with FPGA hardware and resources, timing constraints.  At least 3 years of experience designing and implementing digital filters, feedback loops, or other digital signal processing algorithms.
• Experience in DSPs, microcontrollers, assembly language and/or AFMs - desired but not required.
• Experience in the development of interfaces including high speed serial protocols (USB, PCIe, LVDS) and low speed serial protocols (CAN bus, I2C, SPI). 
• Experience developing solutions with Altera or Xilinx FPGAs.
• Experience with C++/Simulink/DSP Builder/Matlab languages; ability to read and understand digital electronics designs.
• Experience in the complete product development life cycle, from requirements gathering through to test and support.  Evidence of technical support capability with strong customer empathy and focus.
• Enthusiasm, eagerness and ability to learn quickly.  A curious, driven, creative and detail-oriented mindset, with the ability to solve challenging problems based on complicated and sometimes incomplete requirements.
• The ability to communicate clearly both in person and in writing, and to build strong professional relationships with colleagues across multiple departments and geographies.
