Job Description

The Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) Firmware Engineer in the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS) Test Engineering Division (TEN) will develop FPGA firmware for Electronic Warfare (EW) and avionics Hardware-in-the-Loop (HITL) test and evaluation (T&E) systems. These systems provide high fidelity simulation and stimulation of real-time Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR), Radio Frequency (RF), and avionics environments for testing EW and avionics systems. The Firmware Engineer will use the latest high-speed/high-density FPGAs and System-on-Chips (SoCs) coupled with the latest in firmware design techniques to develop customized solutions for complex EW T&E needs. Specific applications may include high bandwidth data collection, digital signal processing, data manipulation, custom interfaces, and SoC processor interaction.

Job Duties

  • Lead and contribute to the design, development and validation of key FPGA firmware efforts (VHDL, Verilog)
  • Integrate system components and support equipment in laboratory and field settings; develop test-benches and simulations to validate functional requirements
  • Serve as a technical expert on assigned projects and systems; to include keeping up-to-date on industry standards, system interfaces, engineering tools, and road maps for current and future technologies
  • Participate in technical meetings with GTRI and sponsor personnel, and support issue tracking and sprint planning
  • Participate in new business development efforts by contributing to white papers, RFI/RFP responses, sponsor briefs, and by proposing new research areas suitable for internal research and development (IR&D) funding
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree in one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree in one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist

  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Bachelor's and Masters degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Bachelor's or Doctoral degree with one or both in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant field and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in FPGA design with VHDL and/or Verilog
  • Experience with high-speed communications standards, e.g., Ethernet, PCI Express,
  • Experience developing interfaces, including ARINC- and VITA-standard protocols, Serial, discrete, MIL-STD-1553 and analog interfaces

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active Secret Clearance
  • FPGA experience with Xilinx product family including Zynq MPSoC

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
