Faculty position in Engineering System Architectures for Quantum Networks

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
This position is established as part of the Quantum Software Consortium (QSC) programme: a 10-year grant funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science through the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. QSC is hosted by three research clusters: Leiden University, QuSoft (collaboration of the University of Amsterdam, the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science CWI and Free University Amsterdam) and the Delft institute QuTech (a collaboration between Delft University of Technology and TNO). Within QuTech, about 200 scientists and engineers aim to develop scalable prototypes of quantum computer and quantum internet, in a highly interdisciplinary environment. The faculty position will be embedded in the EEMCS department (see below), with a secondment for the duration of the NWO grant (until 2027) to QuTech, in its roadmap Quantum Internet and Networked Computing.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the social relevance of its research programmes. The faculty’s excellent facilities accentuate its international position in teaching and research. Within this interdisciplinary and international setting the faculty employs more than 1100 employees, including about 400 graduate students and about 2100 students. Together they work on a broad range of technical innovations in the fields of sustainable energy, telecommunications, microelectronics, embedded systems, computer and software engineering, interactive multimedia and applied mathematics.

Job description
Delft University of Technology invites applications for a tenure-track position in the design and implementation of quantum network control architectures. This position is integrated into the Quantum Internet and Networked Computing (QINC) division at QuTech, and part of the Department of Quantum Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.

QINC is a mission-driven division with the long-term ambition to make quantum networks a reality. Its interdisciplinary team presently joins experimental and theoretical physics, quantum information theory, as well as computer science and applied systems engineering, and operates at the cutting edge of quantum internet technology. Next to its long-term research efforts, QINC also engages in early-stage field demonstrations which provide the opportunity to showcase its results in the field and drive further development in collaboration with relevant industry partners.

Requirements

The successful candidate has a strong background in electrical engineering or computer engineering hardware, and will drive the research and development of control architectures for quantum network systems. The candidate is expected to be able to formulate and execute an independent research program on engineering quantum network systems and processors, and to work in synergy with the remainder of the QINC team on its joint ambition to bring quantum networks into the real world. Possible research fields include integrated hardware for network systems, hardware control of network systems, integrated quantum/classical device architectures, and the design and implementation of a low-level network control stack. The candidate is also expected to participate in the teaching of courses offered by the EEMCS faculty both at the undergraduate and at the graduate level.

Terms of employment
At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Section leader, department leaders and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.
