We have an opening for a Fabrication Technician to provide electrical/ electronic fabrication, assembly, test, installation, activation, and maintenance support for NIFs diagnostic, instrumentation, control and safety systems. Other responsibilities may involve testing, characterization and documentation support. Interactions will be with project leaders, experimentalists, engineers, technical supervisors, technicians, and designers. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the 532.1 or 532.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Provide basic electronic support, fabrication, test, documentation, and maintenance for NIF Control Systems hardware including but not limited to cable terminations (e.g. coaxial, fiber optics, power, multiconductor), connectors (e.g., BNC, MS, D), electrical and electronics components, chassis, printed wiring boards, electromechanical hardware.
- Utilize industry standard techniques to control ESD around susceptible components.
- Use standard fabrication tools (e.g., soldering iron, crimping tool, mechanical hand tools & power tools, drill press, power saws, Rotex punch, shears) in the fabrication and repair of electrical/electronic hardware.
- Perform equipment tests and collect data using fundamental knowledge.
- Read, interpret and follow oneline electrical diagrams, cable plant documentation and schematics.
- Read, interpret and follow specific layout and assembly diagrams to construct and package electromechanical units.
- Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the 532.2 Level
- Work with engineers and technicians to install, modify, test, maintain and commission moderately complex electronic instrumentation and equipment, providing feedback on inconsistencies or gaps in documentation.
- Perform equipment tests and document test results.

- Associate degree in Electronics Technology, or related technology, or the equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience.
- Basic knowledge of and ability to work from verbal and written instructions, sketches, drawings, prints, and electronic schematics under close supervision.
- Basic technical skills and fundamental knowledge of cable/chassis fabrication technology and standards.
- Experience working in a customer service/field support environment.
- Ability to work in and on large electrical/electronic systems.
- Ability to work with electronic and computer-based instrumentation, data acquisition, control and feedback systems, interlock systems, and mechanical hardware.
- Effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills and abilities.

In Addition, at the 532.2 Level
- Experience with personal computers, micro-controller, PLCs and distributed computer control programs.
- Experience working independently on moderately complex technical tasks that are well understood with limited guidance including the ability to make independent, functional decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) to ensure equipment and personnel safety as well as knowledge of electrical diagnostic instrumentation used in a laboratory (hand-held meters, oscilloscopes, probes, TDRS, etc.).

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
